Hi @OED - I've been researching bubble and squeak and found a reference a decade earlier than your earliest citation (1762). This satirical recipe is from 1752, and after eating it advises to "drink ſixteen Pints of fat Ale, ſmoak, ſleep, ſnoar, belch and forget your Book."

I also enjoyed the advice on selecting a cabbage: "that which is most windy and capable of the greatest Report". Plus the oddly specific cooking time: "Half an hour, three Minutes and two Seconds."

Not about pubs per se, but I know some of you like to line your stomach ahead of a pub crawl with a fry-up... and if you've ever wondered about the history of that iconic British meal, I've made a video about it: youtu.be/qvFJVZ_KdWk

Friday lunchtime pint at the Red Lion on Crown Passage. Magical as always. Otter Bitter as usual.

A very difficult choice. Obviously the only viable solution is a pint of each.

Obviously it's good news that Simpsons is reopening in some form or other, but £400k on "restoring" the benches...? Was that absolutely necessary? Also it seems to have gained some turquoise paint. Why isn't that odious fad over yet? cityam.com/the-story-of-how-…

My tour of Salisbury's pubs. What a beautiful city. Of course the Haunch of Venison is the star of the show but several others there I also thought were very much worth a visit. youtube.com/watch?v=vFpMzf_Q…

In Salisbury doing a pub video. Some lovely pubs here. Including, of course, the Haunch of Venison.

Sam Smith's Black Forest Gateau. Get a half of their kriek-esque cherry beer and a bottle of their absurdly good chocolate stout. Mix in a glass to your own desired proportions. Enjoy both the resulting flavour and the subsequent unwavering adulation of everyone around you.

Sorry a correction - I confused Downland Brewery Best with another beer. The hops are actually Admiral, Perle, Galena and Challenger. downlandsbrewery.com/portfol…
An embarrassment of riches at the Harp today - 4 of the 8 cask ales are bitters! Might give one a miss for use of Amarillo hops (Downlands Brewery Best) but even 3/8 is a great showing in London in 2026. Started with a Harvey's Sussex Best (of course), which was excellent...

Next, Orbit Extra Special Bitter. First Gold, Bramling Cross and East Kent Golding hops so it's fruity (marmalade?) but not grapefruity. On the lighter side colour wise and a nice subtle natural carbonation from the cask conditioning. Surprisingly easy drinking for 4.8%.

Old posts where you can still just about read the name of the now defunct parish of St. James Westminster which ceased to exist in 1922. On the corner of Ingestre Place in Soho. I wonder if these were ever painted blue...?

Here it is then - my thoughts on the "Blue Posts" pubs - I really don't think it has anything to do with sedan chairs! youtu.be/sKkI61xyoWs

I visited the five existing Blue Posts pubs in London, to figure out where this pub name really comes from. I'm just not convinced by the sedan chair "taxi rank" theory! Or the hunting ground / plague theories. The real answer is much more simple! Video will be out tomorrow.

Berwick on Tweed, which on some level feels like my spiritual home, seen through the train window earlier. Absolutely loving this train journey from Edinburgh back to London (the Laphroaig is helping!). When it all works*, it's delightful. * Which it didn't on the way here!
