Athlete Update 🔥 Creighton RHP Mason Koch @MasonKoch328 has been dominating hitters this year with a team-leading 44 k’s through 28.2 ip to just 13 bb’s. I started working with Mason last fall and he came to us with a lot of talent, already touching 94, but was inconsistent and lacked quality secondary pitches. We tweaked his grips a bit, working along the 2S axis for the sweeper which got him out to 0 VB/-20 HB at 80-82, as well as a variation of it around 6VB/-10 HB at 85. Ideally he will be 82.5+ with the true sweeper which we are working on, and will also add a true cutter that’s closer to his FB velo and a shorter break. From this, as well as just getting to know Mason and how he threw, we figured a supinator like him could be a good candidate to add a seam shifted 2S to his arsenal to pair with his 4S. He had played around with a 2S in the past, occasionally getting a demon sinker to show, but was unable to find consistency with it. After talking with Mason, we discovered it was from him actively pronating, as many are taught, which was killing the axis that would allow him to catch the seam and get the desired movement. So, we got Mason back to how his arm wants to naturally unwind with a bit of supination and lo and behold he was able to get it to 6 VB/ 18-20 HB. Along with an improved arsenal, we also worked on adding a few ticks of velo which has also helped with his success. Mason has been up to 96 this year and consistently in the mid 90’s, whereas in the past he would touch 94. We worked on an improved weight shift, not pushing out of the back leg, and finding a stacked posture that allowed him to stay closed off with his upper half as well as not pull off the pitch. These adjustments have not only lead to increased velocity for Mason, but also a more consistent release point which really helped his command and consistency of all of his offerings. Ultimately, Mason is an extremely hard-working athlete with an insatiable desire to get better.
