ICYMI: UCLA researchers discovered that stem cell-derived brain models can offer a new window into how anesthesia works. newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/s…
Time travel for cells? Almost. 🧬⏪ iPSC technology lets researchers reprogram adult cells back to an undifferentiated state, so they can become nearly any cell type.

ALT Graphic with the titles 'Word of the Week' and 'iPSC.' Includes a magnifying glass, a drawing of a petri dish with cells, and the phrase 'Cell differentiation!' The website stemcell.ucla.edu appears on the side.

ALT Definition card for the word 'iPSC,' which stands for 'Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell'. Text reads: 'Adult cells — typically skin or blood — that have been reprogrammed in the lab to behave like stem cells. This gives them the potential to become any cell type found in the major tissues of the body.' Includes an illustration of a dictionary.

How does a developing brain decide which kinds of cells to make? A @dgsomucla-led study from Dr. Aparna Bhaduri and Dr. Heather Christofk’s labs found that metabolism may help guide that process. Using developing human brain tissue and lab-grown brain models, researchers found that changing glucose availability shifted which types of brain cells formed. The image shows fluorescently labeled cells in the brain models under different glucose conditions, helping researchers see how the mix of developing cell types changed.
