When Benjamin Gukelberger wandered past the UNASA stand at UCT in his first year on campus, he had no idea it would eventually lead him to the floor of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This July he did exactly that - led a 4-person youth delegation to the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). Last night @LRCSouthAfrica hosted the 5th George Bizos Human Rights Award. It could not have had a more fitting recipient than Justice Kate O'Regan. The event brought together people who have been part of the LRC's history in one way or another. I was fortunate to spend 8 formative years at the LRC early in my career - and shared lunch with George Bizos every day over that time. We were reminded, in celebrating George, that he came to South Africa as an undocumented migrant boy on a boat, later recognised as a refugee - and of the prejudice that he experienced trying to access school, study and build a life here. We honoured his courageous contribution, the emblematic struggle lawyer over so many decades. Kate O'Regan gave a moving, sobering and insightful address on the growing shadow of autocratisation and authoritarianism spreading across the world, the backsliding in democracy that so many countries have seen, and how South Africa is not immune to those perils. There is no playbook for defenders of democracy and the rule of law, she observed, and it is left to us locally to find the most effective responses, drawing on history and the strengths of local institutions and civil society.

[PHOTOS] The thrill of graduation was on full display as students from the Faculty of Law at UCT walked across the stage in the Sarah Baartman Hall on 8 September. Family and friends waved from their seats, shouted at the top of their lungs and helped usher every graduand through applause during the afternoon session. Graduates were reminded by the presiding officer that as one chapter came to an exciting end, another one was emerging – one that not only welcomes them to a vibrant UCT alumni network, but one in which they commit to a new era of learning. “Once you have healed from this, I urge you to continue learning, as it does not stop here...” - Professor Mosa Moshabela, Vice-Chancellor View the full photo essay: qr.codes/RKWEeh @UctLaw

Justice Cachalia gave an excellent lecture yesterday - reflective, sobering, full of resolve & vivid reminders of where we come from & what is needed to protect constitutional democracy against today's threats - xenophobia, poverty, calls for authoritarian rule, corruption.
Justice Azhar Cachalia delivers the 2026 Ben Beinart Memorial Lecture, on the topic : From Apartheid to Illiberalism - "A Personal Reflection". Paying tribute to the legal legacy of Professor Ben Beinart, Justice Cachalia talks of his own journey through apartheid, and his recognition that the work required to defend the Constitution is as important as the struggle to achieve it.

Subverting democracy from within - is South Africa following routes already taken in places like Serbia, Israel, the USA? Justice Cachalia uses the notion of illiberalism to describe the backlash against constitutionalism, in his delivery of the 2026 Ben Beinart Memorial Lecture.

Justice Azhar Cachalia talks in-depth about the apartheid regime and the suppression of dissent and resistance in a climate of widespread, entrenched state violence - and efforts by lawyers to challenge the state’s widespread abuses of human rights and to secure legal victories, while the state did everything to prevent lawyers from doing so #BenBeinartMemorialLecture
