PC Andrew Harper's killers will remain in jail, after Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced changes to the early release scheme. It follows a historic Change.org petition started by Aileen O'Connor, chair of Thames Valley Police Federation, which reached one million signatures within 10 days, reflecting widespread public anger over the issue. Reacting to the news, Aileen commented: “PC Andrew Harper made the ultimate sacrifice for the job that he loved, serving communities, serving society. “His killers should never have been considered for early release. It remains shocking that they were. “We are pleased that the Government - despite what was frankly initial reluctance – has eventually listened, seen sense and made the right decision to keep these lowlifes behind bars. “They had no option. “The weight of public and policing opinion against such plans was overwhelming. “The fact that more than one million people signed our petition over this was a historic public backing for police officers." She added: "The one million people who signed our petition and all those who offered messages of support. You have made a difference." 📎 Read her full comment: vist.ly/5gmhh

More than 300,000 people have signed a petition calling for an end to fines and prosecutions for families of children with suspected special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) who can’t attend school. Yesterday it was handed in at Downing Street by actor Anna Maxwell Martin, campaigning mums and MPs including Lee Barron and Hannah Spencer. It started in 2022 with two mums. Susan Liverman’s son Arthur couldn’t go to school because of extreme anxiety and panic attacks. Maddie Roberts’ son Harleigh struggled with anxiety too. Both faced the fear of being fined for something they couldn’t control. Absence fines in England rose to £80 in 2024. Repeat absences can mean £160, then court, with fines of up to £2,500, a community order or even jail. Anna Maxwell Martin called the current system “cruel and unnecessary.” You can sign the petition here: vist.ly/5p62y

“It’s the people who are the beating heart of SOS.” That’s how Nick Knowles described it this week, after the BBC confirmed DIY SOS will be “rested” in 2027 to save money. For 27 years, thousands of tradespeople, suppliers and volunteers have turned up for families facing illness, bereavement and disability. David Claydon, a plasterer who worked on a build last year, has started a petition asking the BBC to keep the show on air. You can add your name here: vist.ly/5p8uj

Before heading to Downing Street today to hand in her 300,000-signature petition, Susan Liverman went on BBC Politics Live to explain why families like hers shouldn’t be punished when their children can’t go to school. Susan’s son tried hard to go to school, but undiagnosed autism and sensory differences made the classroom overwhelming. While she fought for support, she lived with the threat of fines. Thousands of parents are in the same position. Her message is simple: fines and prosecution don’t get children back into education. Proper support and alternatives to mainstream school do. Big Brother viewers are worried about what they’re seeing in the house. In Monday’s episode, Rhianna told Omar she didn’t like the way he spoke to her and tried to call things off. Fellow housemates have described the relationship as toxic, and fans have spent the past week flagging moments they see as controlling, including Omar telling her “your feelings aren’t facts”. Cody Fisher’s petition asks ITV to step in, remove Omar from the house, and review how it supports housemates. You can add your name here: vist.ly/5p52b #BBUK #BigBrother

Playing music out loud on buses in England could soon land you a £100 fine 🎧 The government has announced a crackdown, and on trains it’s already been against the law since 2005. The catch is who actually enforces it. Bus drivers won't be asked to, and instead it will fall to "authorised officers". Lilla Hurst from London started her petition after years of noisy commutes, and too many hostile reactions whenever she asked someone to turn it down. So how should it work? More staff? Reporting it from your phone? Something else entirely? Share your idea on Lilla’s petition: vist.ly/5nz3i

Nearly 9 in 10 Brits say playing music or videos out loud without headphones on public transport is unacceptable, according to a new Ipsos poll. Londoner Lilla says asking people to turn it down “often result[s] in hostile or aggressive responses”. She’s calling on transport authorities to make headphones the rule. Agree? The government has launched a £200m training programme to help teachers support pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). That includes autistic children and children with ADHD. But the first training materials are optional for schools. Charlotte says too many of these children are labelled as “difficult or badly behaved” when they’re actually struggling with sensory overload, anxiety or communication. She’s calling for training to be mandatory, so children feel understood rather than blamed. You can sign the petition here: vist.ly/5nnrk

Since 1 October, new drivers under 24 in Northern Ireland can only carry one young passenger at night for their first six months. Crystal Owen’s son Harvey died in a crash in 2023. She’s campaigning for graduated licences in England and Wales: a minimum learning period, and limits on young passengers for newly qualified 17–19-year-olds. “It does beg the question why in England our young people are not given the same protections,” she told the BBC. Campaign group @SOS Whitstable took their petition to Downing Street yesterday, with actor Danny Dyer by their side. The petition, which now has over 350,000 signatures, calls on the Government to return the water industry to public ownership. Ed Acteson, of SOS Whitstable, handed it in at No 10 with Danny and Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Kevin McKenna. Earlier in the day, a flotilla of barges, one carrying a giant inflatable poo, sailed down the Thames in support of the campaign. Danny has backed the campaign since seeing sewage leaks on the Isle of Sheppey while filming The Dyers’ Caravan Park with daughter Dani. You can add your name here: vist.ly/5ngf6

Cloe supported the prosecution of her abuser. Then she was told she earned too much for legal aid, even though her income barely covered the basics. The legal aid means test hasn’t been updated since 2009. Cloe says the rules leave survivors unable to defend themselves or rebuild their lives. You can sign her petition here: vist.ly/5nbs3

Sophie’s baby was in hospital on breathing support. While she was staying with her, Sophie was denied meals because she was formula feeding rather than breastfeeding. Whether parents get fed on hospital wards depends on the hospital. Families with a baby in neonatal care already face an estimated £405 a week in extra costs, according to the charity Bliss. Sophie says no parent should go hungry at their baby’s bedside, whatever the feeding method. You can sign her petition here: vist.ly/5n8y6

A tragic incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has left a family grieving and a community asking how it could have happened. The park has confirmed the tiger will not be put down. A petition now calls for the next step: making sure nothing like this happens again. It’s asking Yorkshire Wildlife Park and South Yorkshire’s local authorities to put stronger safety and containment measures in place, and to do more to educate visitors about staying safe around wild animals. Should zoos and wildlife parks review their safety measures after incidents like this? You can sign here: vist.ly/5n5ss
