More than 569 million people across the world live with chronic respiratory diseases, and around 4.2 million lives are lost to them every year. They are the fourth leading cause of mortality worldwide. Yet conditions such as severe asthma and COPD remain far too low on the public policy agenda.
To take this conversation beyond the scale of the problem and towards practical action, a two day workshop on advancing chronic respiratory disease policy was organised in Berlin, ahead of the World Health Summit. I joined fellow parliamentarians from 16 countries, along with technical experts from @UNITE_MPNetwork and the Global Health Policy Lab, to look closely at the policy gaps, country specific priorities and, importantly, what can actually be done within our respective health systems. The discussions focused on strengthening national respiratory health policies, bringing respiratory health into the broader NCD agenda, translating global commitments into concrete legislative and policy action, and developing practical parliamentary roadmaps and a Respiratory Health Parliamentary Toolkit that policymakers can take back and use.
The numbers tell us why this cannot wait. We have the evidence. We know the burden. What matters now is turning that knowledge into policy, and policy into better access to diagnosis, medicines and care. That is ultimately how public health commitments should be measured, by the difference they make in people’s lives.

“Communities know what works. Parliamentarians can turn that knowledge into political action. The @GlobalFund, the Coalition of Parliamentarians Engaged to End Malaria in Africa (COPEMA) & @UNITE_MPNetwork are working together to ensure community voices shape health financing decisions and drive accountability in the fight against HIV, TB and malaria.”
Françoise Vanni, on the margins of #WHS2026, on the role of parliamentarians in advancing sustainable and country-led health financing.

🇨🇦 The world needs more Canada.
That’s a phrase I heard several times during UNGA week in New York.
I couldn’t agree more. And in that spirit, I was honored to meet once again with Honorable Randeep Sarai, Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development.
✨After listening to his public commitment on keeping Canada’s leadership role when it comes to multilateralism, we had some time to discuss how we can continue to work together on fundamental issues from AI safety to securing political leadership for global health.
We discussed our work at HealthAI - The Global Agency for Responsible AI in Health, which has had the privilege of working with Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) over the last years.
UNITE Parliamentarians Network for Global Health was also a central part of the discussion, also given the fact that UNITE’s Chapter Chair for North America is Hon. Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of Canada Chambre des communes du Canada 🍁
Thank you for your leadership Honorable Randeep Sarai. We look forward to our continued collaboration.

Care for people living with noncommunicable diseases like heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases or diabetes happens across many moments, from prevention to daily self-care. Patient safety has to be part of every one of them.

If it isn’t safe, it isn’t care.
For people living with heart disease, cancer, diabetes or chronic respiratory disease, care is lifelong. A delayed diagnosis, wrong medicine, unsafe procedure or poor communication can cost lives.
Access to care matters. Safety matters just as much.
Everyone deserves safe care, for life.

🌍 Countries without entrenched legacy systems have an opportunity to explore innovative pathways towards prevention, wellbeing and smarter use of technology such as #AI.

Almost every day, we are confronted with images of 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 and 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 disrupting lives and communities.
News from Nepal is simply heartbreaking and we share our prayers to all those impacted by the disaster and to those working to save lives, putting their own lives at risk 🙏

At the UNITE 2026 Global Summit in Manila, Philippines, during the session with the Global Fund, I was able to reiterate the crucial role that local elected officials can play in ending HIV transmission by 2030. ELCS proudly supports this mobilization!
Since 2014, thanks to Anne Hidalgo's call to action, hundreds of cities have committed to this goal. Paris, as well as San Francisco and Bangkok, are now on track to meet this major challenge. A world without HIV transmission is possible!

In a world facing multiple, overlapping crises, one truth remains constant: health is a political choice.
Bridging the health divide requires political courage to:
* Invest in primary health care;
* Secure sustainable financing for health, both domestically and globally;
* Protect health budgets, even in times of fiscal pressure;
* Ensure no one is left behind.
Parliamentarians have a vital role in securing sustainable investment in health and keeping it at the heart of national development.
That is why @WHO remains committed to working with @UNITE_MPNetwork, providing the evidence, science and technical support needed to advance #HealthForAll.

From an insightful working breakfast to an inspiring gala dinner, the first day of the 5th UNITE Global Summit @UNITE_MPNetwork brought together parliamentarians, ministers, researchers, patient advocates, and global health leaders from around the world to discuss some of the most pressing health challenges of our time.
Our conversations ranged from sustainable health financing, tobacco control, equitable access to medicines, and pandemic preparedness to strengthening health systems and addressing non-communicable diseases. Throughout the day, one message stood out: political courage is essential if we are to transform evidence into legislation, budgets, and meaningful change for our citizens.
The evening concluded with a fitting tribute to Martin Chungong, former Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, who received UNITE’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his exceptional contribution to parliamentary diplomacy, democracy, and global health. His reminder that “Health is a political choice” resonated deeply with everyone in the room.
It was also inspiring to witness how far UNITE Parliamentarians Network for Global Health has come under the visionary leadership of its founder and President, Dr. Ricardo Baptista Leite @RBaptistaLeite. What began as a bold idea has grown into a truly global movement, connecting parliamentarians across continents to champion evidence-based policies and improve health outcomes for millions.
Having served on the UNITE Board during the last parliamentary term and now proudly serving as a UNITE Ambassador for Global Health, it has been incredibly rewarding to witness this journey. When I joined the Pan-African Parliament, I stepped down from the Board to focus on my continental responsibilities, but I remain deeply committed to UNITE’s mission. I look forward to seeing even more parliamentarians join this growing network as we continue building stronger health systems through collaboration, accountability, and courageous political leadership.
The conversations have only just begun, and I look forward to another day of learning, collaboration, and action.
