ALT Pride month On behalf of UT Student Government and the Queer + Trans Student Alliance, we’d like to wish the student body a very happy pride!

ALT History behind Pride In the early hours of Saturday, June 28, 1969, a police raid occurred at a New York City establishment called the Stonewall Inn - a gathering place for the LGBTQ+ community. This incident sparked a sequence of protests and clashes by LGBTQ+ individuals, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of gay liberation and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States. In recognition and remembrance of those transformative Stonewall riots, the month of June was selected as a time to honor their impact and legacy.

ALT Paving the way While pursuing a psychology degree, Wendell Jones, a member of UT's first gay student organization, was told by his adviser he should not pursue the degree since being gay made him unfit to give psychological advice to others. This type of discrimination led to the formation of the Gay Liberation Front, also known as GLF, UT's first gay student activist group in early 1970. In addition to protests and rallies, the group hosted the first GLF conference in spring of 1971, which brought together gay liberation groups from across the country. ALT The Photo shows the inside of a food pantry. There are racks with bins placed on the shelves, each bin containing a different food. Some of these bins appear empty. There is a trash can in the corner of the room and a poster that says “Be Mindful, please only take what you need.”. Photo by Atahan Koksoy.
