For two years in a row, Chicago has recorded its fewest homicides in 60 years while life expectancy has reached its highest point on record. Chicago's Fair Share Budget builds on that progress with investments in safer, healthier communities, including: ✅A record 40,000 paid summer youth jobs with a $24M investment ✅$7M for violence intervention, 390 outreach workers and 50 Youth Peacekeepers ✅Provides $30.9M for libraries, avoiding service cuts and a property tax increase ✅Invests $30M more in homelessness prevention, including $15M for services, $13M for the Low-Income Housing Trust Fund and $2M for the Flexible Housing Pool—projected to prevent 3,000 Chicagoans from losing their homes ✅Opens a mental health clinic and expands CARE to seven days a week ✅Permanently establishes the Department of Community Wellness and Safety ✅Preserves $3M for immigration legal services and education ✅Invests $2.5M in free legal education for communities affected by violence and incarceration ✅Provides $7M in raises for 3,000+ early childhood professionals

We need to put an end to this lie that young people don't want to work. The demand for Chicago Youth Works jobs is greater than our budget to hire. That's why in my Fair Share 2027 Budget, I am calling for an additional $24 million so the City can double the number of young people with paid summer jobs.

While we can never undo or make up for the harm that was done to our communities when our schools were closed, we can decide what comes next. And what comes next must be investments in opportunity, stability, and dignity.

@UWF50 is proud to endorse Bushra Amiwala for Congress for Illinois’s 9th District. This district is in need of someone who is both rooted in and ready to fight for communities like ours.

We know that to achieve a more just world, we need to build powerful movements and so we look not just for people who share our platform but for those who have shown commitment to being part of that movement-building.
