On May 28, 1963, a group of civil rights activists sat down at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter in Jackson, Mississippi, knowing they could face arrest or violence simply for demanding the same service as white customers. What followed became one of the most disturbing and widely photographed lunch counter protests of the Civil Rights Movement. The demonstration began with three young Black activists: Anne Moody, Pearlena Lewis, and Memphis Norman. They were challenging a system that allowed Black Americans to spend their money in stores while denying them the right to sit and eat alongside white customers. When they refused to leave, an angry white crowd gathered around them. Norman was pulled from his stool and beaten, while other demonstrators who joined the protest were subjected to threats, physical attacks, and humiliation. In this photograph, Anne Moody sits beside Joan Trumpauer, a white student from Tougaloo College, and John Salter, a professor who helped organize the demonstration. Members of the crowd poured mustard, ketchup, sugar, and other substances over the protesters while others shouted insults and threatened them. Salter was struck with brass knuckles, and the violence continued as police failed to intervene effectively. Despite the abuse, the demonstrators remained at the counter until the store was closed. The protest was part of a larger campaign organized by the NAACP and local activists, including Medgar Evers, to challenge segregation throughout Jackson. Just fifteen days later, on June 12, 1963, Evers was assassinated outside his home. His death brought further national attention to the dangers faced by those fighting for civil rights in Mississippi.

A young girl in a school for black civil rights activists being trained to not react to hair being pulled and smoke blown in her face, 1960. In 1960, young civil rights activists were trained to endure abuse without reacting. many of them teenagers and children—were taught how to remain calm while facing physical and verbal harassment. The goal was preparation for sit-ins, marches, and protests where hostility was expected.

Hundreds of thousands were likely killed in the last round of war in Ethiopia, in Tigray, and perhaps 100,000 women raped. Please, let's have much greater efforts by the international community this time around to avert renewed war.
Northern Ethiopia is slipping into renewed war. African leaders backed by key outside powers notably the U.S. should urge both sides to deescalate, show restraint, and return to the negotiating table. crisisgroup.org/stm/africa/e…

🚨BREAKING: An ICE/Border Patrol agent approached a U.S. citizen at a gas station, in Lake Worth, Florida, demanded his ID, and when the U.S. citizen asked why? … The agent’s said, “Because you’re an immigrant.” Except that is not how the Constitution works. In the video, the U.S. citizen is standing at a gas station when an agent walks up and says, “Let me see your ID.” The man asks a completely reasonable question, “Why?” The agent responds, “Because you’re an immigrant.” And before the man has even been identified, the agents grab his hands and puts him in handcuffs. People standing around immediately start questioning what is happening…asking the agents how they can arrest someone when they haven’t even identified who he is… But the agents ignore them and walk the man to their vehicle. The Fourth Amendment protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures. The Supreme Court has held that roving Border Patrol agents need reasonable suspicion, based on specific circumstances, to stop someone and question them about immigration status. And apparent ethnicity, by itself, is not enough. So, what was the actual legal basis for demanding this man show his ID? Because if the answer is literally… “because you’re an immigrant,” that should piss off every American. You should not have to prove you’re a U.S. citizen before the government decides it has the right to put you in handcuffs. And this is just another reminder that constitutional rights don’t mean anything if federal agents can violate them, over and over again, with no accountability.

Stacey Abrams crashes out over voter ID and the SAVE America Act: "There is not a state in the US that does not require voter identification." "When they argue that this is about identification, they are lying. They know who we are. That's why they keep coming after [black voters]. It is how restrictive are the rules so that they can limit who can have that identification. I completely support voter ID. I will fight tooth and nail against the SAVE Act, which is trying to create such a restrictive system that they winnow out and filter out the people they don't like so they can't have a voice in our democracy."

Black people. Stop applying and going to Howard University. They are not as prestigious as we make it seem. Go to Morgan State for fraction of the cost and more up to date facilities.
