You know what’s honestly kind of wild? Every African country that’s gone all-in on “looking east” for help never seems to actually get ahead. Take Zimbabwe. The Chinese community there is now the second-largest foreign population—people estimate close to half a million. And what exactly have they brought that’s made life better for ordinary Zimbabweans? Not much. Longcheng Plaza, their so-called “Chinatown,” basically exists for them. It’s where the expats—plenty of whom came straight from jail back home—go to grab rice noodles and soy sauce. That’s about it. It doesn’t do anything for the rest of the city. The truth is, most of them don’t seem to care about Zimbabwe beyond what they can extract from it. They’re busy turning the place as Chinese as possible. You see thousands of fatherless mixed-race kids running around now—little boys and girls with that telltale look—because some guy fresh out of a Chinese prison hadn’t been with a woman in years and didn’t bother with protection. They’ll eat anything that moves: tortoises, pythons, even leopards. Time and again they’ve been caught with rhino horn, ivory, pangolin scales—you name it. Remember the “Cyanide Queen” case? Horrifying stuff. Look, obviously not every Chinese person is like that, but the overall pattern is hard to ignore: very little positive contribution. There’s basically zero evidence of them building anything for the wider community—no proper social clubs, no community halls, no sports fields, nothing. It’s take, take, take. Meanwhile they’re ripping mountains apart at crazy speed, poisoning rivers, clear-cutting forests, wrecking habitats, kicking up dust and noise that ruins life for people in the rural areas. Whole communities get shoved off their land. Workers get paid peanuts—if they get paid at all—often in dangerous conditions with zero contracts or safety standards. And when people finally demand their wages? They’ve been shot in broad daylight. Then you’ve got the Confucius Institutes quietly doing their thing—pushing CCP talking points dressed up as “cultural exchange,” getting into young people’s heads. Honestly, what a mess!
