For years, we have been told that if we want unadulterated food, we should go to the village. But I tell you for free: nowhere is automatically safe anymore. The very places we once trusted for natural, healthy food are gradually becoming vulnerable to the same dangers we thought we could escape. Let me share a disturbing reality from my own village. My village market is well known across Enugu State for its quality palm oil. For generations, people have trusted the market for its rich, natural red oil. However, to our amazement, the adulteration of palm oil has crept into this once trusted market. Some sellers allegedly add chemicals, paints, and other harmful substances to palm oil to make it look brighter, richer, and more appealing to unsuspecting buyers. Imagine buying what you believe is natural red oil, only to discover that you may have brought a dangerous substance into your kitchen! The colour of food should never be more important than the safety of the people who consume it. This is not just about palm oil. It is about the safety of our entire food supply, the health of our families, the future of our children, and the survival of our communities. Food adulteration is a serious threat to public health. While we cannot attribute all the illnesses and deaths we see today to the food we eat, we must recognise that contaminated and adulterated food can cause serious health problems and, in severe cases, death. We cannot continue to fold our arms while greed threatens the food on our tables. We must rise to the occasion! ✅ Consumers must become more conscious of where and how they buy their food. ✅ Traders and farmers must embrace honesty and reject practices that endanger human lives. ✅ Community leaders and market associations must take responsibility for protecting the integrity of our local markets. ✅ Government and food safety agencies must strengthen inspections, enforce regulations, and hold offenders accountable. ✅ Our communities must promote food education, sustainable agriculture, and the production of safe, natural food. This is one of the reasons we must take food security seriously. We need to protect our agricultural heritage, restore trust in our local markets, and ensure that future generations have access to safe, nutritious food. We cannot build a healthy society on an unsafe food system. Let us stand together to salvage our food system, protect our ecosystem, and defend the health of our people. The fight against food adulteration is a fight for life itself. The question is no longer whether we should act. The question is: WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR? Our food must nourish us, not poison us.
