“The issue isn’t just about debunking false information — it also involves addressing extremists’ need for social belonging and identity affirmation.” Nice description of our new paper on extremism and misinformation sharing (led by @ClaraPretus) teapaw.org/vanbavellab/status/167…
What’s Really Going On In The Mind Of A Political Extremist forbes.com/sites/traversmark… via @forbes 50% "get their news from social media." "...people who think they can’t be fooled by misinformation are the most likely to believe it." Add ideology, confirmation bias, & in-group signalling = recipe for a post-truth society

A lot of psychologists cite William James' claim that "Thinking is for doing". I've long thought that claim was badly overstated. And a new paper finds compelling evidence that beliefs are not always for doing--they are themselves cherished possessions. pnas.org/doi/pdf/10.1073/pna…

Many people don't fully understand that there is a large & consequential partisan asymmetry in misinfo in the U.S. It means the push-and-pull b/w left & right is no longer truth neutral. If you inject falsehood systematically into one side, "the middle" is no longer the middle.

Popularism is difficult to execute. Republicans frame culture war issues as liberal extremism. Democratic politicians can choose not to respond & emphasize other issues but others on the left will respond on their own terms & media will still cover, reinforcing Republican frame

New research suggests conservative politicians are more likely to be in your timeline because they are “ratioed” more often by liberals. Online pile-ons often *backfire* because they drive more attention to the target of your anger. It often gives the target a bigger platform.
Most ratioed members of congress are Simena and Manchin, but next 18 are all Republicans! From our new @CSMaP piece at @washingtonpost & @monkeycageblog: washingtonpost.com/outlook/2…
