Our new paper where we have designed a very flexible initial state for baroclinic life cycle simulations is now published in GMD. gmd.copernicus.org/articles/… @INAR_fin @KumpulaScience @Daaanvdb
The initial state has been implemented into the global model OpenIFS. The resulting weather systems are realistic and include a realistic representation of upstream and downstream development. Even more, the initial states are exceptionally stable from a numerical point of view.

Absolutely horrible rain on snow event in Helsinki tonight. After 15 - 20 cm of snow two days ago it’s now above 3C and raining. Freezing rain slightly further north. These events would have been extremely rare in mid February without climate change
