The second season of ‘Sold a Story,’ a podcast about education, opens in 1966 in an Illinois classroom. The teacher is a former Chicago marketing executive named Siegfried Engelmann. Before him sit seven Black children. He calls out arithmetic questions and they answer together, as is the norm in direct instruction, the teaching method Engelmann pioneered. The lesson moves on to algebra. The children keep pace. Then the creator and host of the podcast, Emily Hanford, cuts in. The children, she notes, are in preschool.
Sixty years later, we have UC Berkeley math teaching professor Zvezdelina Stankova complaining, in a San Francisco ‘Standard’ op-ed that went viral this summer, that students at the University of California’s flagship campus were struggling with “fractions and basic algebra you would expect students to learn in middle school.” What happened?
A year after Engelmann showed off his method in a recorded half-hour lesson, President Lyndon B. Johnson instructed education officials in his administration to evaluate the best way to teach poor children. They landed on Engelmann’s direct instruction — but it was never implemented nationwide. The reason was Engelmann’s “militaristic” approach to education, as the education writer Alfie Kohn explained in his criticism of direct instruction, which he said is today favored by “right-wing activists” who “wanted to make sure that learning itself is conceived as a fundamentally passive process.” Engelmann’s supporters’ politics were off, which meant his ideas were bad. And since Kohn gave this assessment in 2022, it seems that little has changed.

JFC not only are they poisoning us but they’re still lying about poisoning us.
A new study shows that water testing labs in the US are treating trace amounts of forever chemicals (PFAS) as "zero" in the statistical averages just because they fall below official detection limits.
This manipulation in the data makes PFAS averages in the US look much less than they actually are, which gives the public a false sense of security.
The study estimates that the recorded data captures less than half (44%) of the actual average PFAS levels. So basically, average concentrations nationwide of PFAS in the water might be DOUBLE what standard reports suggest. This is insane and unacceptable.
These chemicals build up in the body over time, so even trace amounts can be linked to serious health problems like higher risks of certain cancers, immune system issues, high blood pressure during pregnancy, and developmental delays in children.
Rounding the pollution down to zero hides hidden health risks and delays necessary water treatment.
When a water quality report says "Not Detected," people naturally assume it means safe, but it just means the amount was below what standard lab tools were set up to measure.
This was a study done by researchers at Texas Christian University and they analyzed over 1.86 million water sample records.
If public health officials and water agencies assume average levels are much lower than they actually are, they could delay installing better filtration infrastructure or expanding testing, which risks the health of millions of people.
We need to demand independent & accurate public monitoring, require polluters to finance PFAS cleanup, and guarantee safe water as a public good.
Bike advocates are touchy little bitches that block any mention of their fellow travelers mowing people down on sidewalks. As if blocking the messenger magically erases reality. JFC.

Scientists found a way to flush Alzheimer’s plaque out of the brain in minutes.
Without any surgery and drugs.
Your brain has a waste-clearance network called the glymphatic system. It flushes out toxic proteins and dead cells.
But it only really activates during deep, slow-wave sleep.
If you don't sleep, the trash piles up. Over time, that buildup leads to cognitive decline and Alzheimer's.
Until today.
Researchers just published a paper proving they can manually trigger this cleaning cycle.
Without you ever going to sleep.
They used 40.68 MHz ultrashort waves (USW) beamed non-invasively into the brain.
Within 10 minutes, the brain's fluid flow rapidly accelerated.
The waves artificially synchronized the neurons into a Delta state, the exact frequency of deep sleep. This forced the brain's water channels to open and start flushing out the system.
They tested it on mice with traumatic brain injuries and Alzheimer's pathology.
The brain swelling dropped. The toxic proteins were cleared out. Cognitive deficits actually improved.
No surgery. No massive chemical interventions. Just a frequency.
I’ve been to fantastic restaurants located in old, beautiful homes in residential neighborhoods. Dilworth, in Charlotte, has some. They’re great and everybody loves them.

What a bunch of spoiled brat motherfuckers. I’m tired of living in a city where criminals never face any consequences. The subways should be STAFFED with security with TASERS and HANDCUFFS. And the city needs to STOP RELEASING CRIMINALS WITHOUT BAIL. All of this shit makes this city unlivable.
This is very cute, I want it to be true.
The standard international name for Spain comes from the Roman ‘Hispania’, which was adapted from the Phoenician word ‘I-Shpan-ia’.
Around 3,000 years ago, Phoenician explorers arrived on the Iberian Peninsula and saw a massive population of small, furry animals digging holes: rabbits.
They literally named the entire region "The Island/Land of Rabbits", which linguistically evolved over millennia into ‘Spain’.
Spain: ‘Land of Rabbits’. 🐰

holy cow @emmma_camp_ is spreading the biggest lie that “tenants deny entry for repairs”
go to any housing court case for a Group HP action and every landlord will cry this and the majority of these cases win for the tenant because it will reveal the landlord is lying
