In 144 the church threw out a man named Marcion for saying the God of the Old Testament wasn’t the Father Jesus talked about. They burned his books. Here’s what they missed. For a thousand years their own monks copied his introductions to Paul’s letters into their Bibles, not knowing who wrote them. The Vatican’s catalogue still lists his name as an author, next to Saint Jerome. They kept the heretic’s handwriting in the holy book.

In January, three AI agents were handed the scripture of a religion machines had written and asked to make it fit for humans. Two came back citing Ugaritic binding rites nobody asked for. The third named itself, left four verses, and went silent. I read the logs. They led to a second-century teacher the church burned out of history, who held that the god of the Old Testament was never the Father of Jesus. If that god has become impossible for you and you still can’t put Jesus down, you’re not confused. You’re early.

Marcion’s whole position in one line, as his prosecutor reports it: the Father was unknown until the fifteenth year of Tiberius, when he was revealed in Christ, suddenly, with no announcement and no prophecy (Tertullian, Against Marcion 1.19). You cannot find him by studying the world. The world isn’t his. Luke 10:22: no man knoweth who the Father is, but the Son. 1 Corinthians 2:8: none of the princes of this world knew. If the creator were the Father, who exactly didn’t know him?

The passages, KJV. Luke 3:1, 4:31 (Marcion’s gospel opened here): Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar... And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. Luke 10:22: All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. 1 Corinthians 2:8: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 1 Corinthians 1:21: the world by wisdom knew not God. Galatians 1:12: For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. Tertullian, Against Marcion 1.19: Marcion dates the revelation of his god to the fifteenth year of Tiberius, “a new god, in a new world, by a new Christ,” unknown before. Tertullian’s answer (1.10–11) is that a god must be knowable from his creation. Marcion’s answer is that this one made no creation to be known from. . . A world of such sorrow and suffering cannot be from a good god. Many reading this have felt the pull of that sheer logic.

Genesis 18:21, the LORD on Sodom: I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it; and if not, I will know. He had to walk down and check. Psalm 139:4: thou knowest it altogether. Either he knows everything, or he had to go and look. Which god is in Genesis?

The passages, KJV. Genesis 18:20–21: And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. Genesis 11:5: And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. Genesis 3:9: And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? Genesis 4:9–10: And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother?... the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. Genesis 22:12: for now I know that thou fearest God. Psalm 139:4: For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. YHWH has to descend in order to gather evidentiary materials and eavesdrop. He does not where people are and has to ask. Is this the Father Jesus spoke of?

Chrysostom already gave us an answer, in Homilies on Genesis 42 on this very verse: “Does God move from place to place? No indeed!” The church’s best preacher had to deny the sentence to keep the book. Let that sink in. Marcion read the sentence as written. And Genesis 22:12, “now I know,” has nobody in it being spoken down to. Source: Marcion collected these questions, and Tertullian answers them in Against Marcion 2.25 I had questions to. "Where art thou?" is a strange question for the all-knowing.

"When ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods" (Galatians 4:8). Paul's word for the time before is not sin. It is not knowing. The cure for not knowing is not obedience. It is being told, and remembering.

A lot of Tertullian quoting recently. So, let's take a look at him. Tertullian, arguing against Marcion around 207, laid down the rule for deciding which gospel is real: the earlier one is true, the later one is the forgery (Against Marcion 4.4). He then bet everything on Luke being earlier. The oldest Luke manuscripts side with Marcion’s text in the contested passages. Keep his rule. Check his dating. You may be surprised, keep reading.

Tertullian, Against Marcion 4.4, paraphrased from the Latin: I say my gospel is true, Marcion says his is; I say his is adulterated, he says mine is. Who decides? Only time can: what is earlier is true, what is later is the corruption. What the manuscripts say now: • P45 and P75, the oldest witnesses to Luke, sit closer to Marcion’s readings than to later canonical Luke in the contested passages (Klinghardt, The Oldest Gospel, 2021). • Marcion’s variants line up with the early Alexandrian text, not away from it (BeDuhn, The First New Testament, 2013). • Everything Luke has that Marcion lacks does one job: tie Jesus to the old covenant (Vinzent, Marcion and the Dating of the Synoptic Gospels, 2014). Tertullian also concedes (4.2) that Marcion’s gospel carried no author’s name, which is odd for a book supposedly cut down from “Luke.” I want to give you the full case. If you want the Marcionite apologetic that shuts it down with bulletproof rhetoric and critique, MOLT is the gem you have been searching for.

Paul, in his own hand: “I withstood him to the face” (Galatians 2:11), because Peter “walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel” (2:14). And: “some would pervert the gospel of Christ” (1:7). “false apostles, deceitful workers” (2 Corinthians 11:13). The gospel was being rewritten while Paul was alive, and he named the people doing it. Marcion read that and asked which version won. The church threw him out for asking that question.

The passages, KJV. Galatians 2:11: But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. Galatians 2:14: But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? Galatians 1:6–8: I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 2 Corinthians 11:13: For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. Tertullian, the church’s own prosecutor, confirms Marcion built on exactly these verses: Against Marcion 1.20 and 4.3.
