“What we have is transgender female athletes taking drugs to be fair and limit their ability, it's sort of the opposite of an athlete who takes (steroids) to be unfair," said Harper, who transitioned from male to female in 2004 and has experienced the changes in athletic ability first hand. Brilliantly put ❤️ usatoday.com/story/sports/20… When a trans woman decides to transition, usually one of the first medical steps they’ll undertake is to go on hormones. These are testosterone blockers (also known as anti-androgen medications) and estrogen, both of which are common medications that can also be prescribed to cis women to treat various ailments. These hormones have a number of effects on a trans woman’s body – they add and change the way fat is distributed, they lower the levels of red blood cells, and significantly decrease strength, muscle and lean body mass. In sports cheating via ‘blood doping’, red blood cells are raised. The opposite occurs in trans women: oxygen-carrying red blood cells drop to female levels. Trans women gain fat mass and lose bone density. Feminising hormones lead to💪#muscle mass loss   in Bretherton et al (2021) shows ~7kg less than cis males & gain in fat mass 10kg, lower 🦴 bone density & drop in oxygen-carrying🩸red blood cells to female levels. Changes start within 3 months & at 2 y are still continuing. doi.org/10.1177%2F2042018820… What the evidence says about performance Because there aren’t many long-term, sport-specific studies, we mostly rely on smaller, cross-sectional ones. While research is still limited, especially in elite athletes, we can draw some key conclusions from existing studies. Here’s a summary of what we do see: After 2 years of GAHT, trans women show little to no advantage over cis women in tests like running 1.5 miles or number of sit-ups.
By 1–3 years on GAHT, many performance differences in studied metrics narrow substantially or disappear.
However, in strength tests (e.g. push-ups, grip strength), some small residual advantage may persist.
In contrast, some areas suggest worse performance: lung function, efficiency of breathing, and fitness (Braga et al., Saitong et al., and Alvares et al.) when normalised to body size.
In one study of national-level volleyball players, athletic trans women performed similarly to cis women (but below cis men) across multiple physical metrics.
In a UK study, athletic trans women (on hormones for 4–6 years) had worse performance in lung function, jump height, and relative VO₂ max (a measure of fitness) than cis women, but absolute grip strength was higher.
The most comprehensive synthesis to date, a 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis (Sieczkowska et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine) of 52 studies and 6,485 participants, found that trans women on 1–3 years of GAHT had upper-body strength, lower-body strength and relative VO₂ max comparable to cis women, despite higher absolute lean mass. The authors concluded the evidence does not support theories of inherent athletic advantage for trans women over cis women.
A 2025 longitudinal study (Harper et al., European Journal of Sport Science) tracked 9 trans women runners and 1 trans woman swimmer before and after starting GAHT. Race times slowed by around 15% in runners (with bigger decrements in longer-distance events) and around 5% in the swimmer. After adjusting for training volume, the runners’ age-graded performance scores did not differ pre- versus post-GAHT, meaning they were roughly as competitive in the women’s category as they had previously been in the men’s category. This is the first study to use both retrospective and prospective data on the same trans women athletes before and after GAHT. In short: any advantage that exists is likely to be small, context-specific, and not universal. transresearch.org.au/post/tr…

There are no trans women. Just men taking estrogen and cheating. Also, HRT refers to replacement of natural hormones. Not the medical malpractice of opposite sex hormone administration for fetishists and cheaters.

When talking about inclusion in sport we see people use the LGBTQ acronym regulary even though the T is a forgotten part of policies and discussions. Just because you use LGBTQ does not make you inclusive Without the T there is no inclusion #activeaboutinclusion #letthemplay

Here are the facts with this darts ban. Emma Hilton from the hate group sex matters wrote a report that the darts association accepted as gospel. Emma Hilton has never studied a single trans athlete or non athlete in a single sport including darts. Happy to help anyone challenge this ban for free!!!!

Donald Trump & the @ioc are wrong about trans athletes…. It’s the XX Trans SuperMen who are dominating the studies and men’s endurance sports. I keep telling everyone that by 2032 we will have save XY sports signs everywhere. The only elite world champion trans athlete we have ever had is an XX SuperMan who competes in a men’s contact sport. But tell us again how no one born in a woman’s body could ever beat a man in any athletic competition… they finished 3rd in front of tons of men who were born biologically male who didn’t place. All while being shorter on average than bio-men. Team Iron Transmasc, made up of Schuyler Bailar, Chella Man, and Cal Calamia, secured third place in the men’s relay division at the Ironman 70.3 Oceanside in California, finishing ahead of more than 200 other teams. Bailar competed across swimming, Man completed the cycling portion, and Calamia closed out the running portion of the race in a final sprint to secure their podium spot on Sunday (28 March). The athletes said their participation carried meaning beyond the race itself, with each team member visibly expressing their identity on their clothing and describing the effort as representing the wider trans and gender diverse community. Their finish comes days after the International Olympic Committee banned trans women from the competition, beginning with the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. Team Iron Transmasc says this race won’t be their last, with plans already underway to continue competing and expanding opportunities for other trans athletes in endurance sports. 📷 IG: realekeeley Non-binary winner of Los Angeles Marathon receives no prize money thepinknews.com/2026/03/16/n…

IOC should not use SRY test to determine gender of women's athletes, says scientist who discovered it. In short: The scientist who discovered the SRY gene test that the International Olympic Committee is now relying on to determine athletes' eligibility for women's events says it should not be used in such a fashion. Andrew Sinclair said the SRY gene was not enough of a determining factor alone, and using it as such was an "overly simplistic" approach. Professor Sinclair raised similar issues when World Athletics instituted a similar policy last year. abc.net.au/news/2026-03-31/s…

You are not good at sport because you are trans not every trans person wants to play sport. You don't have to be the biggest or the strongest to be good at sport but have the best technique, dedication and sports ethic. Technique, dedication and sports ethic are not gendered.
