Two recent publications in the @DailyMonitor point to a broader health and human rights concern - Uganda is generating important evidence about who is being affected, where the burden is concentrated, and how our prevention efforts need to respond. On Tuesday, 18 August 2026, the Daily Monitor reported findings from a @UgandaCancerIns Institute study showing significant differences in cancer cases across regions and between women and men. The report recorded 35,968 cancer cases in 2022, with some regions carrying a much heavier burden than others. Today, 24 August 2026, the Daily Monitor reports that ๐—ž๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐—›๐—œ๐—ฉ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ธ, based on a study by the @KCCAUG. The report also shows that women accounted for 62% of the new HIV-positive cases identified in the study. These numbers should make us pause. They tell us more than the scale of the health challenges. The question, therefore, should not stop at It should be - What are we doing with this evidence? Are prevention programmes reaching the communities and populations carrying the greatest burden? Are people able to access timely testing, early diagnosis and quality treatment? Are health services responding to the realities that put women, young people and other vulnerable populations at greater risk? And are resources being directed where the need is greatest? Beyond informing reports and headlines, this health data should influence policy, guide resource allocation, strengthen prevention and improve access to care.

Aguko Mirembe Victoria @cehurduganda brought it back to basics: civic space isnโ€™t just about politics or voting. Itโ€™s rooted in our civil rights under Article 38 of the Ugandan Constitution: freedom of expression, association, assembly, and access to information. She reminded us that civic space shows up in everyday things too: digital activism, community volunteering, peer education, petitions, local mobilization. #BNNYouthSummit2026 #InternationalYouthDay2026 #ReachAHandAfrica #BilliNowNow2026

Ms Victoria Mirembe, a CEHURD intern, explains that self-care does not replace healthcare services. Rather, it complements them by empowering individuals to take an active role in managing their health while recognizing when professional medical care is needed. When practiced appropriately, self-care improves health outcomes, promotes informed health-seeking behaviour, and strengthens the continuum of care. #Selfcare4UHC #InternationalSelfCareMonth

Civic space also extends to volunteering. You can become a community volunteer or a peer educator. Educate your peers, especially those younger than you. Because at the end of the day, someone has to take up the responsibility to nurture the next generation. That too is civic space. - Aguko Mirembe Victoria, @cehurduganda #BNNYouthSummit2026 #YouthDay2026
You can actually participate in civil society and in civic space in many ways. And it does not have to be targeted at government. We all know our political environment right now. You have to choose your words carefully. You canโ€™t always say this or say that. But what you can do is find a way to align yourself with organizations that can nurture you and your talents. - Aguko Mirembe Victoria, @cehurduganda #BNNYouthSummit2026 #YouthDay2026
