The Cubs' expectations wonât change for 2027; this will still be a team with World Series goals. But Hoyerâs front office has a lot to do to make next yearâs team better equipped than the one that was rapidly bounced from the playoffs. chicago.suntimes.com/cubs/20âŚ
Jed Hoyer wrapped up the Cubsâ season today â and started talking about whatâs to come this offseason â far earlier than he hoped after their playoff letdown.
âIt feels like we let something slip away.â chicago.suntimes.com/cubs/20âŚ
"It's time to look in the mirror and get better. ... It starts now for everybody in this organization. Assess the year and come back and be better next year because it wasn't good enough." chicago.suntimes.com/cubs/20âŚ
The Cubs' disappointing playoff failure generates plenty of questions. But only one matters: How do they make sure this doesn't happen again? chicago.suntimes.com/cubs/20âŚ
An earlier-than-expected playoff exit for a team that spent the summer talking about its World Series hopes. A clubhouse full of guys trying to explain coming nowhere close to meeting their goals. chicago.suntimes.com/cubs/20âŚ

"The goal is to win, and we didn't play well enough to do that. It's time to look in the mirror and get better. ... I look at it as a failure. We need to win." chicago.suntimes.com/cubs/20âŚ
The Cubs had World Series goals. They didnât come close to meeting them. Their season is over before the calendar even turned to October. chicago.suntimes.com/cubs/20âŚ
FINAL: Cubs' season is over. They're swept out of playoffs with 4-1 loss to Padres in Game 2.
They scored one run on eight hits in the two-game series. PCA and Alex Bregman went 0-for-15 with eight strikeouts. Daniel Palencia gave up a big-blow homer to Gavin Sheets.
Kevin Gausman gave up a one-out double to Xander Bogaerts and got the hook. Craig Counsell went with Daniel Palencia, who struck a batter out before giving up a rocket of a two-run homer to Gavin Sheets.
Cubs down 4-1 in the fourth.
Cubs have their first run of the series. With one out in the fourth, Seiya Suzuki singles, Ian Happ walks, and Nico Hoerner drives one in with a base hit.
Cubs trim Padres' lead to 2-1 and chase their starter, Nick Pivetta.
The Cubs are out of ABS challenges before the end of the third inning. Pete Crow-Armstrong lost one in the first at-bat of the game. And Carson Kelly loses one during Fernando Tatis Jr.'s at-bat in the bottom of the third.
Kevin Gausman went 1-2-3 in the first inning, but the Padres get to him in the second. Ty France led off with a double, Jackson Merrill hit an infield single and stole second base, and Xander Bogaerts poked an RBI knock through the infield.
Cubs down 1-0.
The top of the first inning in Game 2 goes exactly as it did for the Cubs last night in Game 1: Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman struck out, and Michael Busch grounded out to first base.
