Yesterday, I had the pleasure of witnessing The Song of Njama at the Freetown International Conference Centre.
The performance was captivating, thought-provoking and deeply resonant, particularly as we continue to champion arts and culture this 2026, our Year of Culture and Creativity.
Theatre remains an integral part of our cultural identity and collective memory. In telling a local story through a contemporary lens, The Song of Njama sends a strong message: theatre in Sierra Leone is alive and thriving. We possess the talent, creativity and technical capacity to tell compelling stories that reflect who we are as a people.
Theatre serves as an effective vehicle for preserving and sharing our heritage and our aspirations in an authentic and deeply personal way.
I commend the incorporation of the Troupe Beat, a creative expression conceptualised and developed by the One Nation Reggae Festival team, which continues to gain appreciation as a sound rooted in Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage while appealing to global audiences.
The National Dance Troupe was phenomenal, as always.
To Dori Turay(playwright), Bilal Jalloh (director), entire cast and crew, many of whom were making their debut,I extend my heartfelt congratulations on a resounding success.
This is the true essence of collaborative partnerships. May the Song of Njama mark the beginning of a theatrical renaissance in Sierra Leone, inspiring many more productions in the years ahead.
Such productions create opportunities across generations and serve as a catalyst for skills development and economic growth.

Celebrating Chef Niematulai DiGrazia’s Triumph on Beat Bobby Flay
In a dazzling display of culinary prowess, Chef Niematulai DiGrazia, a proud daughter of #SierraLeone, has brought global acclaim to her homeland and adopted hometown of #Shreveport, #Louisiana, by winning the @FoodNetwork's #BeatBobbyFlay in the episode titled “Fight Like a Lion.” With her vibrant maafe, peanut butter stew, she outshone celebrity chef Bobby Flay, showcasing the bold flavors and cultural depth of Sierra Leonean cuisine on a national stage.
Hailing from Sierra Leone, Chef Niema’s culinary journey began under the guidance of her mother, whose resourceful approach to cooking with limited ingredients instilled a deep appreciation for food as a vessel of love and community. This early connection to her roots shapes every dish she creates, infusing them with the warmth and vibrancy of Sierra Leone. “My mother taught me that food is more than sustenance—it’s a story of who we are,” Niema shared in a recent interview.
As the founder of RNL Authentics, LLC, Chef Niema seamlessly blends her Sierra Leonean heritage with her passion for culinary arts and fashion. Starting with fashion fittings, she transitioned to launching RNL’s Cookery Corner, an Afro-Fusion food truck, in 2020. Her innovative approach earned her a spot in @Southern_Living’s Chefs to Watch 2022 and the title of one of North Louisiana’s Best Chefs in 2019 by the Prize Foundation. These accolades fueled the evolution of RNL’s Cookery Corner into a brick-and-mortar establishment, Niema’s Cookery Corner, a testament to her vision and entrepreneurial spirit.
Now, as the executive chef at Abby Singer’s Bistro @abbysingers since 2024, alongside her husband, Chef de Cuisine Matthew DiGrazia, Niema has redefined the restaurant’s menu with a fusion of West African, Caribbean, and Southern influences. Her victory on Beat Bobby Flay, marked by a vibrant mango salad and her soulful maafe stew, underscored her ability to weave Sierra Leone’s culinary traditions into dishes that resonate universally. “This win is for every young Black woman, every immigrant, and every Southern chef daring to make their mark,” Niema declared. “It’s a celebration of my Sierra Leonean roots and the Shreveport community that embraced me.”
Niema’s impact extends far beyond the kitchen. Known for catering to distinguished clients and Mardi Gras krewes, she delivers a “Taste of Culture” that celebrates Sierra Leone’s rich culinary heritage. With over 20 years of experience, she mentors aspiring chefs, sharing her expertise and passion for Afro-Fusion cuisine. Her journey from a food truck to a celebrated restaurant and now a national platform reflects her unwavering dedication to honoring her Sierra Leonean identity while elevating Shreveport’s culinary scene.
We congratulate Chef Niematulai DiGrazia for her remarkable achievement. From the vibrant streets of #Freetown to the heart of Shreveport, her maafe stew and indomitable spirit have put Sierra Leonean cuisine on the map. Here’s to Chef Niema cooking with heart, sass, and the flavours of Mama Salone!
