Starting today, Nov. 2, the 30-day speed safety camera warning period will be in effect outside school zone hours. The speed cameras will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. After the warning period, effective Dec. 2, drivers who exceed the posted speed limit of 35 mph will receive an infraction notice by mail. Drivers who go over the 20 mph speed limit during school zone hours will still receive a ticket during the warning period. The speed limit depends on the time of day: ▶ During school zone hours: Drivers who go over 20 mph can get a ticket. ▶ Outside school zone hours: Drivers who go over 35 mph can get a ticket. Drivers who go over the 20 mph speed limit during school zone hours will still get tickets during the warning period. The four automated speed enforcement locations are: 📍 SW Campus Drive at TAF@Saghalie 📍 21st Avenue SW at TAF@Saghalie 📍 1st Avenue S at Panther Lake Elementary School 📍 SW 320th Street at Twin Lakes Elementary School The expansion is part of the City’s broader Automated Enforcement Program, which also includes red-light cameras at three intersections in Federal Way. Did you know the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center and the City of Federal Way have grown up together? The Aquatic Center opened its doors the same year Federal Way became a city, 1990! 🎉 The Aquatic Center opened in the spring of 1990 in preparation for the Goodwill Games, and keeps welcoming major events to Federal Way, including the NCAA Championships in 2025. Recently, Mayor Jim Ferrell joined King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer at a celebration of 35+ years of being a world-class venue. We can't wait to see what great events will happen at the Aquatic Center in the next 30+ years. #FederalWayWa #DidYouKnow #KingCounty #Championships #AquaticsCenter #SouthSound #VisitFederalWay #FederalWayCommunity

Black Friday came early this year in Federal Way! More than 150 community members packed the South King Tool Library over the weekend for a free clothing swap that allowed them to pick up new used items to add to their wardrobe. The clothing swap is intended to keep clothes and other items in good condition out of landfills and in the hands of the local community. It was a chance to give old items new life and commit to a more sustainable Federal Way! Thank you to everyone who donated to the event and those who stopped by and went home with new used items for their closet. Keep an eye on the Environmental Services upcoming events page for more opportunities to keep Federal Way green: bit.ly/FWES_Events

Did you know Federal Way’s first library opened with a collection of just 147 books? 📚📖 The Steel Lake Library opened its doors in 1944 in the old Steel Lake Elementary School building (on the east side of 28th Avenue South and 312th Street). It was staffed wholly by volunteers and had nearly 2,000 items checked out in the first year. Today, Federal Way has two @KCLS locations (on 320th Street and 1st Way South) with thousands of books between them. What is your favorite thing about the Federal Way libraries? Did you know the Brooklake Historic Community Center was rumored to be a speakeasy during prohibition? 👀 Today, this historic building sits on the grounds of the West Hylebos Wetlands, but early in the 20th century, local stories claimed it may have been a spot where moonshine was served to the community. Whether fact or local legend, it’s a fascinating piece of Federal Way history! What is your favorite historical building in Federal Way?
