A first hand opportunity to see #Sussex #Archaeology in action!
The final update from the #opnightingale team, @CotswoldArch and @thetimeteam on their amazing week in the Cotswolds. Amazing #archaeology, fascinating finds and a stream of surprises! What more could you ask for? Congrats all on another brilliant dig!
Last day in the beautiful Cotswolds. Roman brooches, coins, pot & confirmation we have a circular plank-built Roman house with hearth. Constant last minute surprises. Thank you to all the team: you’ll see the @thetimeteam prog soon! @CotswoldArch #archaeology #wellbeing #veterans
And a further update on Trench 2 from our friends at #opnightingale still working away on site:
Day 6 - a day of sorting out Roman roundhouse, lifting the hearth stones and finding dating evidence. We think it’s a timber plank building with more than one phase. Being buzzed by a Spitfire was fun too!!! #archaeology #veterans #wellbeing @thetimeteam @CotswoldArch
An update on the tantalising feature in Trench 2. It looks to all be Roman #Archaeology. An interesting site that developed through time: #opnightingale @CotswoldArch @thetimeteam
Into the circular Roman house now and finding hobnails, pots (squashed!) and animal bone. A Roman spoon outside too. Not much time left to resolve the form and function but hopes are high. The hearth tomorrow…. #Archaeology #Wellbeing #veterans @CotswoldArch @thetimeteam
The Day 4 update from our friends at Op Nightingale. The chap in the red looks familiar 🙃 A big THANK YOU to the team on site for their kind invitation - it is always such a privilege to work alongside you and to witness #history in the making 😆 @CotswoldArch @thetimeteam
Day 4: We now think the circular feature is a Roman building with a hearth! Lots of pottery & coins with Saxon burials & a splendid knife too. Huge thanks to @WEOROD for their help. Now to discover the purpose of THAT building! @thetimeteam @CotswoldArch #archaeology #wellbeing
The Day 3 update is showing Trench 2 far more clearly - fascinating #archaeology from our friends at Operation Nightingale 😉
Trench 2 now open on our Op Nightingale Cotswold dig. One word. WOW! But what is it!? And what is the pink stone in the middle? More soon. And trench 1 now has three Saxon burials. @CotswoldArch @thetimeteam #archaeology #wellbeing #veterans #roman
Aha! Trench 1 is obviously the place to be for the #AngloSaxon #Archaeology!
A soggy day 2 on our Gloucestershire dog with @thetimeteam and @CotswoldArch and the exciting news is we think we have found a number of Saxon burials in trench 1. More tomorrow… 1of2
On Day 2 things are starting to happen 😉 It doesn't look #AngloSaxon - but it's most definitely #archaeology:
Starting to uncover the circular feature in trench 2 - will it be Bronze Age or 7th Century? Or will other elements like this Roman sherd be more relevant! @CotswoldArch @thetimeteam #wellbeing #archaeology #veterans #roman #saxon
The day one update from our friends at Operation Nightingale. The conditions were not what they had hoped for:
A VERY soggy day 1 on our Cotswold dig didn’t make things easy, but trench one is now almost open and features are appearing…. #archaeology #wellbeing #veterans #saxon
Following their work in 2019 our friends at Op Nightingale have been back in the Cotswolds this week seeking more fascinating #AngloSaxon #archaeology. We will let them tell the story:
Our Op Nightingale excavation with @CotswoldArch & @thetimeteam starts on Monday! Last time we were there, this remarkable bowl was found in a 6th Century context! What will we find next week? Watch this space!! #archaeology #wellbeing #veterans #saxon photo (c) @beardysnapper
