The first oral dialogue for Neha just concluded! 🗣️Such a great discussion highlighting the reality of housing justice work, and the barriers advocates face trying to uphold the right to housing for women and gender-diverse people.

"These deaths are not isolated tragedies—they are the result of systemic failures that disproportionately push women into homelessness and prevent them from accessing lifesaving supports. Women’s homelessness is distinct, often hidden, and deeply connected to gender-based violence, poverty, and a lack of safe housing options." Stefania Seccia @WNHHNetwork

As Canada continues to face a housing crisis, we’re seeing a rise in the scapegoating of migrants and other marginalized communities. In reality, this is an intentional distraction from the true cause of Canada’s housing crisis. ⬇️ 🧵(1/3)

This is what the housing crisis looks like for women except now with no minister of women and gender equality and with stalled housing policy.
“A Marketplace investigation found that ads offering shelter in exchange for sex are not only common on popular rental sites, but they also often target young women and international students specifically. While some ads are explicit about their demands, others are more subtle, putting unsuspecting responders at risk, advocates for women warn.
Soliciting sex for housing is illegal in Canada, but it is also a growing trend, according to Brampton Regional Coun. Rowena Santos, particularly as the housing crisis makes it increasingly difficult to find an affordable place to live.”
Everyday, new lows which underscore why #MVAWG and #femicide occurs in this country.

Doug Ford will most likely reintroduce legislation that will make being homeless in public criminal. At the same time, we are facing myriad impacts from tariffs that could destroy people's livelihoods. Homelessness is set to get worse; it shouldn't be criminalized.
Doug Ford faces a long list of challenges in his third term as premier.
Tariffs, a slowing economy, an affordability crisis, to few doctors, fixing hallway health care and dealing with encampments it’s a long list of issues facing awaiting Ford. trib.al/wtKILEl

My latest for @torontotodayca: Toronto has a crisis of homeless women dying young — just 36 years old on average. As a front-line worker with homeless people, I know what this means — and some of the women included in these statistics, like Tiffani. torontotoday.ca/local/opinio…

It’s the same across the country…. Housing for those MOST in need must be prioritized.
🔴 Women experiencing homelessness in Toronto are dying at just 36 years old—nearly 50 years younger than the general population. This is a crisis of gender-based violence, poverty, & systemic neglect. We need urgent action.
