The Cedar River Rainbow Bend Levee Removal and Floodplain Reconnection project increased public safety and provided a buffer against future floods. Residents along the flood area were relocated into safer homes, a levee was removed, and the channel was widened, allowing the river to move into the historical floodplain, slow water flow, and create new habitat where threatened salmon and trout can rest and grow. Homes relocated from flood area: 56. Floodplain connected to Cedar River: 40 acres. Creates new habitat that endangered salmon and trout need for survival. A popular recreation area, hundreds of users float past the Rainbow Bend property every summer. Jon Hansen says, "People actively use the gravel bar adjacent to the new trail spur built as part of the restoration effort. This is common up and down the Cedar River during hot summer days when people crowd the banks of the river wherever they can gain access."
