🌟 FACES OF WATERLOO PRIDE: WCC EDITION 🌟 Meet Aereon Walker from the Waterloo Career Center! 🐾🩺 ➡️Which program(s) are you enrolled in at the WCC, and what initially drew you to this field? Veterinary Science, Human Anatomy & Physiology, and Animal Science. I came to the Career Center to explore my options as to what I want to do in the future. ➡️What do you like best about attending the WCC compared to a traditional classroom setting? The WCC has many hands-on preparations. The environment doesn't feel like a traditional classroom, which makes learning more enjoyable and coming to class feel more confident. ➡️What is the coolest hands-on project, lab, or real-world experience you’ve completed in your WCC program so far? The coolest hands-on project I have completed in my WCC program so far was creating a cardboard dog with very detailed features. It taught me how their features reflect their health and what they were originally bred for. ➡️How have your classes and certifications at the WCC helped prepare you for the "real world" and your career after graduation? WCC has given me hands-on learning experience with animals and anatomy, which has helped me understand what to expect in a veterinary career. It has also taught me how to work responsibly and confidently in a professional environment. ➡️ What are your plans after high school, and how did your time at the WCC shape or change your future goals? I plan on going to UNI for four years in biology, then transferring to Iowa State for Doctoral Veterinary Medicine (DVM) school to become a vet. The WCC has allowed me to explore different career options while also thinking seriously about my future. It made me realize I wanted a career I can enjoy and feel proud of doing every day, while also making a difference. ➡️What is an accomplishment or skill you’ve gained at the WCC that you are incredibly proud of? I'm proud of better managing my time and prioritizing my responsibilities. It helped me stay on top of my schoolwork while balancing everything else, like work and clubs. "Take advantage of the opportunities the WCC gives you, learn new skills, try new things, and figure out what you actually enjoy." — Aereon Walker #FacesOfWaterlooPride #WaterlooProud #WaterlooCareerCenter #WaterlooSchools #StudentSpotlight #FutureVet #VetScience

🌟 FACES OF WATERLOO PRIDE: WCC EDITION 🌟 Meet Harrison Ritter from the Waterloo Career Center! 💻🔒 ➡️Which program(s) are you enrolled in at the WCC, and what initially drew you to this field? Information and Tech Internship and AI in the Workforce. ➡️What do you like best about attending the WCC compared to a traditional classroom setting? I think the hands-on portion is definitely better and you really get to discover what you like when taking classes at the WCC because they replicate what the workforce might teach you. ➡️What is the coolest hands-on project, lab, or real-world experience you’ve completed in your WCC program so far? A few years back we did a competition through Iowa State and we ended up taking 2nd place out of 25 teams. ➡️How have your classes and certifications at the WCC helped prepare you for the "real world" and your career after graduation? They haven't really fully impacted me yet, but they are preparing me for what I will need to know. ➡️What are your plans after high school, and how did your time at the WCC shape or change your future goals? I haven't fully found out what I want to do yet, but definitely something around cybersecurity and a four-year college. The time I spent at the WCC has changed my future goals greatly. I never really thought about going into anything tech-related until I ended up taking a cyber class my freshman year. ➡️What is an accomplishment or skill you’ve gained at the WCC that you are incredibly proud of? One accomplishment I'm pretty proud of is getting a few certifications, as those can make or break getting the job or not. "Go try something you might not like or be comfortable with, as it might be something that changes you forever and something you might want to do when you graduate." — Harrison Ritter #FacesOfWaterlooPride #WaterlooProud #WaterlooCareerCenter #WaterlooSchools #StudentSpotlight #CyberSecurity #TechInEducation

🌟 FACES OF WATERLOO PRIDE: WCC EDITION 🌟 Meet Delta Omari ➡️Which program(s) are you enrolled in at the WCC, and what initially drew you to this field? CNC Programming, Introduction to Robotics, Introduction to 3D Modeling, Basic Machine Theory, Intro to Electrician, and HVAC. What initially drew me is that I was looking for a career in mechanical engineering, and I want to consume as much knowledge as I can. ➡️What do you like best about attending the WCC compared to a traditional classroom setting? What I like best about attending WCC is that they have more hands-on work. I believe it’s a great experience and opportunity to have. ➡️What is the coolest hands-on project, lab, or real-world experience you’ve completed in your WCC program so far? The coolest hands-on project I had was creating a whistle out of metal with the mill and lathe, and also using G-code to engrave designs. ➡️How have your classes and certifications at the WCC helped prepare you for the "real world" and your career after graduation? CNC Programming and Basic Machine Theory have given me skills that will be a great help in the field I am going into. They have taught me how to operate a milling and lathe machine, which has brought me one step closer to becoming a mechanical engineer. ➡️What are your plans after high school, and how did your time at the WCC shape or change your future goals? My plans after high school are to go to college and get an apprenticeship so I can get paid while I learn. WCC has shaped my goals because it showed me that you can learn and be good at anything you want in life. ➡️What is an accomplishment or skill you’ve gained at the WCC that you are incredibly proud of? The skills that I've learned at WCC include how to operate a milling and lathe machine, as well as how to measure using different calipers. "Try as many classes as possible—it will give you a bigger view of what you like and careers you might be interested in." — Delta Omari #FacesOfWaterlooPride #WaterlooProud #WaterlooCareerCenter #WaterlooSchools #StudentSpotlight #FutureEngineer #STEM

🌟Faces of Waterloo Pride🌟 Carlee Kammeyer, Waterloo Career Center Which program(s) are you enrolled in at the WCC, and what initially drew you to this field? ➡️Human Anatomy & Physiology and Nurse Aide. What do you like best about attending the WCC compared to a traditional classroom setting? ➡️What I like most about the WCC is the hands-on learning opportunities that we get to have. I learn best by being able to do things myself and the WCC gives me the freedom to do that. ➡️What is the coolest hands-on project, lab, or real-world experience you’ve completed in your WCC program so far? The coolest lab that I have done in my program is a simulation where we had to change a resident, change their bedding, feed them, and groom them using the mannequins in the nurse aid lab. It helped show us what taking care of a real resident would be like and allowed us to practice our skills. ➡️How have your classes and certifications at the WCC helped prepare you for the "real world" and your career after graduation? After graduation, I plan on going into the healthcare field and the nurse aide program will help me gain patient care experience that I can use for my future career in radiology. These classes have also given me a taste of what college classes are like and have shown me what I can expect the workload to be like. ➡️What are your plans after high school, and how did your time at the WCC shape or change your future goals? My plans after high school are to go to the University of Iowa and major in radiation sciences. I plan to go into the nuclear medicine program there to become a nuclear medicine technologist. The WCC helped shape my future goals by allowing me to further explore my interests of anatomy and science while ensuring that healthcare is truly a field that I want to pursue. ➡️What is an accomplishment or skill you’ve gained at the WCC that you are incredibly proud of? A skill that I have gained that I am incredibly proud of is my time management and being able to balance all of my classes to stay on top of my work. "The college classes that you take here are more rigorous than those of a normal class, but if you stay on top of your work, the credit and experience are worth it." — Carlee Kammeyer #WaterlooPride #WaterlooProud #WaterlooCareerCenter #HandsOnLearning #FacesOfWaterlooPride

🌟 Introducing: Faces of Waterloo Pride! 🌟 Every student in Waterloo Schools has a unique story, passion, and path to success. We are thrilled to launch our new weekly feature series, Faces of Waterloo Pride, where we’ll be highlighting incredible students across all of our school buildings throughout the district! To kick things off, we are starting at the Waterloo Career Center (WCC) to showcase how our high schoolers are getting hands-on, real-world experience for their futures. Check out our first feature below! 💙✨ Student Q&A Feature: Cole Judas ➡️Which program(s) are you enrolled in at the WCC, and what initially drew you to this field? Gas Engine Rebuild and Construction. What drew me to these fields is that you get to actually build and work with your hands to complete the coursework. I’m not entirely sure of my career path yet and I chose these two to help me get insight into what a good career path would be for me. ➡️What do you like best about attending the WCC compared to a traditional classroom setting? What I love most about the WCC is that you get the feeling of real-world experience and not just getting jammed in a classroom to get lectures. I love how my instructors give us an assignment and it’s up to us as students to get it right. The WCC creates an environment that lets people have trial and error in order for students to learn. ➡️What is the coolest hands-on project, lab, or real-world experience you’ve completed in your WCC program so far? In Gas Engine Rebuild, we are in the process of putting our engines back together. It has been a great learning experience for me, especially if you consider that I knew nothing about engines coming into this class. ➡️How have your classes and certifications at the WCC helped prepare you for the "real world" and your career after graduation? So far, I have learned a ton about how engines function and how all the parts work, and that is huge for after I move forward because I will be able to work on my own lawnmowers and such. ➡️What are your plans after high school, and how did your time at the WCC shape or change your future goals? I’m still up in the air, but I am starting to lean towards becoming an electrical lineman. The WCC helped me see what a day in the life of some jobs would be and it’s helped me see if I would like to continue with this career path or try something new. ➡️What is an accomplishment or skill you’ve gained at the WCC that you are incredibly proud of? One accomplishment I would say is in construction class when I first drew up a blueprint and then created a 1/12 scale model of a house. With this project, I was able to see what all goes into making blueprints, framing, and building a house. "Don’t think about it too hard—every class you take here will benefit your life in some way. For example, I probably won’t become a mechanic, but after completing the course “Gas Engine Rebuild” I will know the skills to work on lawnmowers and all different types of small engines. If you have the space and time in your schedule, I would say it is 100% a great choice to come and try something new." — Cole Judas #FacesOfWaterlooPride #WaterlooProud #WaterlooCareerCenter #WaterlooSchools #StudentSpotlight

🍎Kingsley Elementary took a BIG bite out of National School Lunch Week with the Great Apple Crunch! Our students joined kids across the district (and the state!) to bite into fresh, locally grown Iowa apples all at the very same time. It was a delicious way to celebrate healthy eating and show some major love to our amazing local Iowa farmers!
