Where these deceptive stories come from, the perverse incentive structure that breeds them and who profits from them. Hedge funds/big market participants employ expensive PR firms with monthly retainers for top tier firms that can go as high as 75k per month. And $500 per hour. Seems like a lot. But this is worth every penny if that money helps get the right story placed at the right time. Hedge fund makes a bet. Contacts PR firm to get a story that is not false per se as that would be illegal but massages the facts like this FT story did and like magic that is a win for their book. These PR firms typically hire lots of former financial “Journalists.” You play ball well you get hired. Best paying job for former journalists. Your stories cause a big financial impact even if they turn out to be missleading or false. Financial impact is more important than the Truth or reporting nuance. The bigger the financial impact the more profits that can be extracted. Bloomberg basis bonus for reporters on having stories that have the most financial impact. More financial impact = more BB terminal subscribers. This sensationalized financial impact is not only used by traditional media outlets. Some of the bigger blogs that use this platform intentionally write deceptive headlines they know will move the market. It’s pretty obvious who those bloggers are how the incentive structure of causing market impact writing over the truth to color how their stories are presented. The one’s with questionable morals will chose market impact over actual facts or nuance every-time.
