1/ 🚨 The hard questions in climate action can no longer be avoided. On Nov 11, I joined Caritas Switzerland's Symposium 2024 to debate the intersection of climate protection & poverty reduction in the Global South. Here’s what we discussed. 🧵👇
1/ Halfway to 2030, the world is checking its promise to nature. COP17, the UN Biodiversity Conference, is happening right now in Yerevan, Armenia (19–30 Oct). Here’s what you need to know 🧵
7/ Ministers meet 27–28 Oct, with final decisions due 30 Oct. Nature has no seat at that table, so let’s speak up for it.

6/ Fight #2: Who benefits? Africa wants companies using our genetic resources to pay into the Cali Fund. Russia prefers voluntary sharing. Indigenous Peoples want direct access to conservation money.
5/ Fight #1: Who pays? Countries are split on whether emerging economies like China should contribute to nature finance alongside wealthy nations.
4/ Week one: 14 decisions adopted on biosafety, invasive species, gender, compliance, and monitoring. Progress, but the hardest fights are still ahead.
3/ Follow the money: for every $1 spent protecting nature, about $30 flows into activities that harm it. In 2023, $7.3 trillion went into nature-negative industries. Biodiversity finance is still under half of the $200B/year goal.
2/ In 2022, 196 countries agreed to protect 30% of land and ocean by 2030. A new UN report says fewer than half of national targets are on track. Current pledges would protect only 26% of land and 12% of ocean.
Sunday reset
One small thing for today: whoever you named this week, actually tell them. Not just here to their face or in a message.
Next week: careers, COP31, and closing out the month. See you tomorrow.

Thank you
For the birthday messages, the shared posts, the trees you audited and the heroes you named.
This week on The Eco Advocate: Mashujaa & Me. We looked at what COP17 means for nature, thanked the people who protect it without a camera,
#WeekInReview
And celebrated a birthday the way I like best: with a wish list that helps something grow.
Next week: Your Turn. How to build a conservation career without working for free, and four things I'm watching at COP31 for Africa.

How can we redirect finance from harming nature to protecting it? 🌿
Join @theGEF and @UNDP BIOFIN tomorrow at #COP17Armenia to explore subsidy reform, biodiversity finance solutions and investment opportunities.

COP17 week 1, for anyone doing the work on the ground:
1️⃣ The global review — pledges vs. delivery
2️⃣ Finance — is the money actually moving?
3️⃣ The Cali Fund — who benefits from nature's genetic data?
#EcoAdvocate
4️⃣ Indigenous peoples & communities — real seat or side seat?
5️⃣ 30x30 — expanding with communities, or over them?
The question for every delegation: what changes for the community nearest the wildlife by 2030?
What are you tracking?

COP17 week 1 in one line:
Countries are checking whether the world is on track to stop nature loss by 2030.
The question for Africa: where's the finance, and who gets it?

Meet the Mashujaa: 4 kinds of environmental heroes you probably walk past every day
🗑️ The waste picker. Sorts, collects, and keeps material out of landfills, often unpaid and unrecognized.
#EcoAdvocate
🦁 The ranger. Walks the fence line, tracks poachers, and rescues wildlife on the worst days.
🌱 The teacher. Waters the sapling, grows the habit, and hands the next generation a reason to care.
🗺️ The young mapper. Turns a phone and a walk into data that leaders can't ignore.
Today, look up. Say thank you. Learn their name.
Who's the hero in your community?

Who's the environmental hero in your community?
A ranger, a teacher, a waste picker, a neighbor who never stops planting trees.
Let's give them their flowers while they can smell them.

8 years of environmental writing, 8 lessons:
Start with a question, not a statistic. Give every piece a next step. Repetition beats virality. Rest is part of the work.
Still learning that last one. #EnvironmentalCommunication
