Why is the share price calculation method better than an APY-based estimate?
Well, a lot of DeFi vaults work the same way. You deposit an asset, like USDC, and get vault shares back.
Each share is worth a certain amount of USDC. That amount is the share price. When the vault earns, the share price goes up. When it loses money, it goes down.
So the share price is the most direct answer to the question you actually care about: "did this vault make me money?"
APY tries to predict the answer. The share price simply tells you.

40% interest can still make you poorer. Just ask a Turkish saver.
In recent years, Turkish banks have offered lira deposit rates above 40%. In most countries that would be unheard of. But for long stretches, inflation in Turkey ran even higher.
A saver earning 40% while prices rose 60% was still losing purchasing power, just more slowly.
Thatโs why many Turkish savers moved into dollars, gold and crypto. This isn't because they were simply chasing a bigger number, it's just the necessity of wanting a better return that actually beat inflation.
This is a lesson that travels well, and is applicable everywhere. Always ask what a yield is worth after inflation, in the currency you actually spend.

TVL and share price get mixed up a lot, but they measure different things.
TVL is how much money sits in a vault. It goes up when people deposit, or when the assets inside rise in price.
Share price is how much each share has earned. It only goes up when the vault actually makes money.
A vault can double its TVL in a month and barely move its share price. That means lots of new deposits and not much yield. In DeFi, popular and profitable arenโt always the same thing, and only the share price tells you about profit.

If everyoneโs routing to the same onchain opportunities, allocation stops being the only differentiation.
Whatโs left is whether an LP can verify what actually happened to their capital, and most protocol canโt answer that because they report advertised rates rather than realized ones.
We've observed that sophisticated LPs are already asking for the realized number, and we believe that with time, the rest will.

In New York, 5% on stablecoins is a nice bonus.
In Lagos or Buenos Aires, holding dollars already protects your savings. The yield is extra.
For a lot of people, stablecoins are a savings account, when they could be so much more.

Your USDC earns nothing for you. It earns T-bill interest for the issuer.
In the US, stablecoin issuers arenโt allowed to pass that interest on to holders.
So if you want yield on stablecoins, it has to come from what you do with them.
Think about that.

Re-introducing myself since we've had a fair few followers come in recently...
- I'm Ben Simpson, founder of The Collective Shift
- We're a crypto research company doing close to 8 figures in revenue this year with 1,100+ active members and have institutional partnerships like CoinSpot, Coinbase and SwfytX who use our research to help their millions of users.
Hereโs a snippet of my journey, over the last 10 years ๐
2014: At 15, I started my business journey from a bunkbed in Tasmania, Australia, manufacturing uniforms for local sports teams and sourcing from China.
2017: At 18, I quit school to go all-in on this business. That little uniform company grew to mid-6-figures over 3 years. Then I discovered Bitcoin at this time & shut down that business to go all-in on it. I then found a crypto YouTuber and worked under him.
2019: Learnt everything about the crypto space. Saw how backwards the entire industry was, everyone trying to make money from each other and there was no real credible independent information. I also lost tens of thousands of dollars on crypto after the bull market here.
2020: Nearly lost everything when a business partnership went bad, business went basically to zero overnight and had to start again.
2021: Started The Collective Shift with one mission: to help everyone invest into crypto with confidence. No selling tokens, no paid promotions. Just sharing real education.
2024: Held our first in-person event with only 12 Platinum members in the room.
2025: The year everything happened. Awarded "Think Big Be Boldโ Melbourne Entrepreneur Award! Held our second in-person event with 130 Platinum members in the room. Hit our first $1M/month. Grew to 10 team members, and started scaling in the US.
Today: We're at 15 team members, hit close to 8-figures in revenue and now building and scaling into our US side of the company,
Iโm not here to brag. One thing I love doing is documenting the real journey. Wins, losses, and lessons - so crypto investors can see what I'm like behind the scenes, and follow along.
If you want to learn more about CS, our success stories & how to actually build wealth through crypto, I've shared more on this in the comments below.

"How do I check what $ayKAT has earned?"
Two ways. You can log on to the AlphaYields ayKAT dashboard, and check.
OR
You can directly read the share price at two dates and compare them.
To get the yield in KAT, multiply the share price by the avKAT โ KAT rate (avKAT's convertToAssets rate, read on the avKAT contract 0x7231dbaCdFc968E07656D12389AB20De82FbfCeB):
KAT value = share_price ร avKAT_rate
APY in KAT = (KAT value at end / KAT value at start) ^ (365 / days held) โ 1
Here's an illustration:
Share price 1.0000 โ 1.0200 and avKAT rate 1.100 โ 1.105 over 90 days. KAT value goes 1.1000 โ 1.1271, so APY โ 10.4% in KAT (vs 8.4% if you only use the share price).
Equivalent form: (1 + v)(1 + a) โ 1, where v is the share-price return and a is the avKAT โ KAT rate return over the same window.
NOTE: Short windows are noisy, so the longer the window, the truer the read.

A vault that advertises 11% and delivers 11% is telling you its number means something.
A vault that advertises 16% and keeps delivering 10% is telling you something too, usually that rewards are decaying or the strategy has compressed and the dashboard hasn't caught up.
Two vaults can land on the same realized yield with very different risk underneath. The one with the persistent gap owes you an explanation.
Checking costs nothing. Put the advertised number next to the share price and see whether they agree.
Start paying attention.

Liquid staking tokens were the first DeFi yield product that could pass a total-return audit.
While it solved the measurement problem, the question an allocator actually cares about still remained largely unanswered:
was this particular LST earning its risk?
A staking benchmark exists in practice. The Composite Ether Staking Rate has tracked the base rate since 2023 which tells you what staking pays in general.
But operator concentration or depeg behavior for the token in your wallet?
Another game entirely, and the market still hasn't settled on a shared way to describe either.

A dollar on a blockchain earns nothing by itself. It earns whatever it gets routed into, and right now most of the market picks that route off a dashboard.
Weโd rather it picked off the share price. Thatโs the layer weโre building.
