Long-distance air travel accounts for a substantial part of university's greenhouse emissions. My article with @Ellsworth_Krebs in @timeshighered, teapaw.org/timeshighered/status/1…, last week suggests to use #ClimateIncome adapted to travel to address this challenge. A summary 🧵: 1/8
Opinion: Climate income schemes can help institutions live up to declarations of a climate emergency, say @Ellsworth_Krebs and @WolframMoebius

Every time someone says there are no more taboos in today’s Western societies, I think to myself: ‘yeah, try having a realistic conversation at your next dinner party about the climate crisis, and about what it requires from us. And good luck.’

Deciding on a bicycle path based on the number of cyclists, is just as stupid as justifying a bridge by counting the people swimming across a river.

Elated that #MEEhubs2024 was a huge success! I hope that others keep this experiment in mind when planning future conferences. A great pleasure to work closely with @Prokaryota @WolframMoebius and @saramitri, but thanks to all hub organizers, sponsors and volunteers!
On my way home from #MEEhubs2024. Feeling exhausted, proud, and privileged to haved worked with amazing colleagues, amongst many most closely with @saramitri, @Prokaryota and @ErikBakkeren. Hopefully the next @MEEhubs can have (even) more hubs across the globe!
I love seeing how people adapt to the hub format of #MEEhubs2024. Questions across hubs and with online participants all the time. Now a talk in Lausanne advertising a related poster in San Diego!

Wow, I'm so impressed with how well this is working! I'm just following along at home, but next time I'm all for a Midwest hub!
What an amazing lineup, too!
👏👏 to the organizers.

All #MEEhubs2024 hubs online early European evening / American morning. Each hub giving a good wave to colleagues across the globe before start of our first cross-hub activity.
Hosted a session on sustainability at @MEEhubs tonight. Not surprising, but still good to see how people from near and far discuss the same topics we do at @LSI_Exeter, @UoE_Physics and @UniofExeter. Local change is not a drop in the ocean!
First out of five #MEEhubs2024 cross-hub activities was on sustainability. Colleagues from near and far shared concerns, reported failures and celebrated successes. Loads of overlap between reported failures and successes means it is worth to keep trying! @LEAFinLabs
