Building Stronger Voices for Bladder Cancer Advocacy
We were honoured to be part of the World Bladder Cancer Patient Forum, bringing together patient advocates and representatives from 30+ countries to connect, learn, and share perspectives.
The forum was a valuable opportunity to understand the diverse challenges and healthcare gaps faced across regions, while exploring how shared experiences can lead to meaningful ideas and actionable solutions.
A heartfelt thank you to the organisers and everyone who contributed to this enriching conversation. Together, we can continue strengthening the patient voice and bladder cancer advocacy globally. 💙🌍🤝

🚺 Addressing gaps in support for women with bladder cancer, closing #BladderCancerForum26
1 in 4 people diagnosed with bladder cancer is a woman. Our survey found 69% were diagnosed with another condition first, and 39% of those were told it was a UTI.
Christine La Rose moderated Angela Pelletier, Hilda Kwok and Dr Makarand Khochikar.
💬 The myth that bladder cancer is more aggressive in women? The biology is the same. What differs is how long the diagnosis takes.

💬 Capturing lived experience with bladder cancer, at #BladderCancerForum26
🗣 Amit Rele, diagnosed at 45 with no symptoms, three years on from bladder removal and back to golf, the gym and the sea.
🗣 Junichiro Sano, vice-president of Japanese Bladder Cancer Patient Organisation, could not find another bladder cancer survivor in Japan, so he built the group that did not exist.
🗣 Amy Samuel, who refused to wait 45 days for a biopsy result in Senegal, and has since put bladder cancer on national media across West Africa.

🗣️ Charting the path to Shared Decision-Making at #BladderCancerForum26
📊 Our 2023 survey found 82% of patients needed more information than they were given.
The panel, moderated by Adam Lynch, looked at why:
🔹 Patients do not know what to ask, and what they need to ask about is life afterwards
🔹 Doctors are trained to deliver the best clinical outcome, not to hand the decision over
🔹 Consultations are too short for a real conversation
💬 One fix already working in Malaysia: a trained navigator sits with the patient afterwards, and nobody decides the same day.

🤝 Role of carers in the healthcare system, at #BladderCancerForum26
🔎 A bladder cancer diagnosis does not stop with the patient. It reaches partners, parents and children.
Lori Funk moderated Laurent Gemenick, who lives with bladder cancer, and David Garrigues Ronda, his partner and carer, both co-founders of @CANVES_ES .
💬 Carers live the illness too, not physically, but psychologically. They listens, organises appointments, filters online information, prepares the questions, and remembers what was said in the room when the patient cannot.
