A sports journalist's job has never been to cover the sport. It's to tell good stories, wherever and however they're uncovered. That whole "protecting the brand" thing? Maybe that's your business, but it isn't mine. Sharing things others want hidden is part of the job.
One of the biggest shifts in sports + social right now? Our job isn’t really to cover the sport. Yes, coverage will always matter to a degree. But if you’re buried in play-by-play, media scrums, and basic blocking + tackling, you’re never getting to great. Real growth comes from building connection with fans and beyond. That happens through emotion, entertainment, access and personality. Sounds simple. Almost no one does it consistently. Why? Because it means getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. Saying no to things we’ve always done. Getting a different kind of buy-in from athletes and leadership. Protecting the brand, but still letting the work be fun. Getting to great means we stop overthinking. We trust our gut. We get out of the sports echo chamber. We don't take ourselves too seriously. And we have a pulse on what stops people in their scroll.

McDonald's uses 3 different eggs. Only 1 of them is cracked in the restaurant. The Egg McMuffin gets a Grade A egg cracked into a ring on the grill. The Big Breakfast scramble is poured from a carton of eggs and citric acid. The folded egg on the biscuits and McGriddles is eggs, nonfat milk, modified food starch, salt and citric acid. A supplier cooks it, folds it and flash freezes it. The store warms it on the grill. Citric acid keeps a cooked egg from going gray on a hot hold, and the starch holds water in a patty that's been frozen and thawed so it doesn't weep on the biscuit. The milk adds volume and softens the bite. McDonald’s purchases over 2 billion eggs in the US and Canada a year.

A deep cut in NJ, but elsewhere this would be remembered for generations. When Jerry Healy first ran for Jersey City mayor in a 2004 special election, someone photographed him passed out on his front porch, naked and drunk. That was the first of 3 mayoral elections Healy won

Urban walking is not a recognised activity in America. Sidewalks often don’t exist or randomly disappear!

You can also go to a public library and have a conversation with a librarian that might help you expand your taste and worldview instead of merely affirming it. They’ll even let you check out the books for free.
You can give ChatGPT a photo of an empty bookshelf and ask it to fill the shelves with real books based on what it knows about you. Kinda fun that image gen is so good now!

In 2021, a Belgian farmer became so annoyed by a 150 kg (330 lb) stone that constantly blocked his tractor, that he moved it. Unfortunately for him, the stone marked the border with France, and he’d inadvertently made Belgium 2.29 m (7.5 ft) bigger. 1/3

I texted my children that we got the puppy they’ve been begging me for and sent them a link with pictures. 🐢When they clicked on the link, it took them to a webpage that said YOU’RE GROUNDED. They’ll be spending the weekend retaking our family’s cybersecurity training course.
