Caleb Williams is about to keep $10 million that almost every player in the NFL just hands over to somebody else.
He doesn't have an agent. Never did. Next year he's up for a new deal with the Bears, and Albert Breer expects the 2024 quarterback class to clear $70 million a year. On a five-year contract, an agent is allowed to take up to 3% of that. That's $10.5 million walking out the door for one negotiation.
For perspective, his entire four-year rookie contract was $39.49 million. The fee he's skipping is worth more than a quarter of it.
Wouldn't five lawyers cost more than one agent?
Not even close. Say they bill $1,500 an hour, which is what partners at top firms charge. $10.5 million pays for 7,000 hours, or 1,400 hours per lawyer. That's about eight months of full-time work for each of them. A quarterback extension takes a few weeks of real work, maybe a couple of months if talks get messy. He'd have to be getting robbed for the lawyers to cost more than the commission.
There's a less obvious reason this works, and it comes down to who's loyal to who. A big agency negotiates with the same 32 teams every single year on behalf of dozens of players. Your deal is one of hundreds they'll do with those GMs over a career, so they have every reason to stay on good terms with the front office. Caleb's lawyers have one client in that building, and he pays them by the hour whether the Bears like them or not.
He split the job up, too. Agents usually handle the contract, the marketing, the PR and the money advice all in one package and take a cut of everything. Caleb hired a separate person for each piece, the way a company staffs departments. He even started his own investment firm, 888 Midas, a month before he signed his rookie deal.
He isn't the first quarterback to go without an agent. Lamar Jackson did it with his mom by his side, and his talks with Baltimore dragged on for about two years, through a franchise tag and a public trade request, before he landed $260 million with $185 million guaranteed. He saved around $7.8 million in fees and took a lot of that heat by himself.
Caleb built a whole staff around the same idea. After last season, when he took the Bears to their first division title since 2018 and led the league with six fourth-quarter comebacks, he has the leverage to use it.
When Chicago sits down to pay him next year, every person on Caleb's side of the table will be someone he hired, and he'll know exactly what each one costs.
Caleb Williams, who signed a fully guaranteed 4-year, $39.49 million rookie contract with the Bears, explains why he entered the NFL Draft without an agent: โI have five lawyersโ
โNo matter how many games you win, no matter how good you are, no matter all of that, the NFL is still put together as a business, and so am Iโ
โI donโt have an agent. I have other things in place. I have my lawyers. I have my attorneys. I have my financial advisor. I have my accountants. I have my marketing. I have my PR and crisis. I have it all. Itโs just the label of an agent is not thereโ
โI have people in place and work delegated to certain positions and people and things like that. I have five lawyers actually. I know what I have and I know who Iโm paying. I have people in place to handle things the way they need to and things like thatโ

Brian Westbrook reveals what Andy Reid said to him while standing beside his own son's casket at his funeral, Westbrook approached his former coach hoping to comfort him during the most heartbreaking moment of his life, and says instead Reid looked at Westbrook and asked how he could help him because he knew he had just transitioned out of football and was looking for what was next
โIโll say Andy Reid. Andy Reid was important and influential in my life because you go into the league from a Division I-AA school, and you don't really know very many people. You're just there to grind. And the one thing Andy Reid said was, โListen, I don't want to hear you talk. I don't want you to do all this other stuff. I just want you to listen to your veterans, follow their lead, and grind every single day. And if you do that, I'm going to give you a chance. I'm going to give you an opportunity.โโ
โAnd he was a man of his word. When someone says all you have to do is these things, and you follow those things, and they're going to give you this, that's meaningful to you. And to this day, I'll never forget this. This was one of the most, it was actually weirdโbut I think it shows the man that Andy Reid is.โ
โHis son had a bad drug problem and ended up passing away at camp. I was a year out of the NFL at this time, and so I'm going to the funeral. And the strength of this man, Andy Reid, he's standing at his son's casket. I mean, there's lines a mile long to see him. And I walk up to him, and I'm broken because I knew these kids since I was in college. I'm broken.โ
โAnd I give him a hug, and I'm crying, and I'm like, โCoach, you good? What do you need?โ Before he even answered my question, he said, โWhat do you need? How can I help you? You're out of the league now. You're doing different things, TV, radio, all this other stuff. How can I help you get to where you want to?โโ
โWe're literally at his son's funeral, beside his son's casket, and he's asking me this. And I'm confused because I'm like, โI'm here to comfort you.โ And through all of this, he is still trying to help former players. Still trying to mentor. Still trying to do those things. And even today, when you hear players talk about Andy Reid, they say he's a father figure. He's a great man. He's the best coach.โ
โEven the issues that him and T.O. had, they're tight like this today, right? And so, you know, I think about guys like that. I probably could name another 50 guys that certainly had an impact on my Mount Rushmore, but those people have influenced my life in so many different ways. Things would be totally different for me if I didn't have those men in my life, and my mother, of course.โ
