We have completed our geography topic on Frozen Kingdoms. We learnt about many features of the Arctic and Antarctic including polar day and night, landscapes, climate and oceans. We also learnt about famous expeditions and why they failed. We created lovely summary leaflets.
We learnt how to use different pencils to create various shades. We also learnt different techniques to create texture. We practised observational drawing using a grid and then learnt how to use basic shapes to help us without a grid. our final piece is inspired by Lucy Arnold.
What fabulous pieces of writing we have had today! We have just read a tragic chapter of Holes where Katherine’s love is ruthlessly shot and killed. We took on the role of Miss Katherine and completed a diary of the horrific events. This is a super example.
Year 6 have been looking at the difference between processed and homemade foods. To investigate the difference, we made our own bread then tasted it along with some processed bread. We compared taste, texture and convenience as well as looking at which option is the healthiest.
In Year 6, we have been studying whole foods and we made a delicious pasta sauce from scratch. We compared our sauce to a similar processed pasta sauce. Ours tasted better in most of our opinions 😋 It was yummy!
Year 6 will be visiting Newby Wiske Hall for this year's residential. Check out the link below to see the fabulous accommodation and activities. We are very excited about it! @RTPS_6B

Our Spring Term book is Holes by Louis Sachar. We will be finding out about the unlucky life of Stanley Yelnats and discovering the real reason why he has to dig holes 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide everyday. What are Stanley and the other inmates searching for?
Today, we focused on indigenous people living within the Arctic region. We each had one group to focus on. We researched facts about them and created a fact page using Keynote. We will create a class information book with our findings.
Our Geography topic for this term is Frozen Kingdoms. We will be looking at features of the polar regions and comparing the Arctic with the Antarctic. We will also look at how climate change is affecting these areas and what we can do to help.
In our Maafa History topic, we learnt about slaves escaping the plantations and became maroons. We focused on one famous maroon in particular: Nanny. After learning all about her, we created a Photo Speak taking on the role of Nanny herself. Here's an example...
We have moved onto fractions! Our first focus is simplifying by finding the highest common factor. Can you solve these questions?
In Maths, we have learnt about the order of operations. Can you figure out the answer to this question? 14 x 3 + 16 x 2 = ?
Abolition of slavery. Our first task was to arrange ourselves in a timeline. We each had a fact that explained an event that contributed to slavery being abolished. We then looked at a selection of statements we were given and used the facts to determine if they were true.
Each one Teach one! To learn about how Britain benefited from the slave trade, we each had a statement that we had to share with the class. We then looked at each statement more closely to determine how it benefited ordinary people, plantation owners, banks, cities and more.
We've now moved onto division using factors to avoid having to use a long division strategy. Unfortunately, this method can't always be used as it only works with multiples of two 1 digit numbers and also if there is no remainder. When it does work, it's super quick and effective
Year 6 have been learning two methods to multiply by 2 digit numbers. The first method is long multiplication. The second method we looked at uses factors which means they complete two short multiplication methods to find the answer. Mrs Shaw prefers this method :-)
Year 6 have been looking at descriptive writing in detail during our English lessons. Here is the writer's toolkit we have been using to analyse texts, plan our ideas and produce our own pieces of writing. Ask us about how these different elements improve our descriptions. :-)
Year 6 have been considering what life would have been like for the African slaves working on plantations. First we listened to a podcast in order to gather facts about the various stages. Then we used this knowledge to write a first person account. Look at this fabulous piece!
As part of our Maafa topic, we looked into the 3 stages of the triangular slave trade. We then created a Keynote presentation with a narrative of the events.
