Hello @BadlyParkedOx this van isn’t actually parked - it drove rather fast the wrong way along Little Clarendon street and then got stuck temporarily. 🙄
My article on Flaubert and kitsch has come out in @NewLitHist newliteraryhistory.org/curre… so I'm allowing myself a moment of nostalgia for the maddest (but also tastiest) research project of my career: Making Madame Bovary's Wedding Cake. With thanks to @TORCHOxford.

Ever wondered why the Scots played such an important part in the British empire? This is much clearer to me after listening to these two great @EmpirePodUK podcasts. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcas…
On inheritocracy. A podcast. Something to think about as I pay my sons their monthly allowance for university study… podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcas…
Oh no, so sad - one of the living legends of British acting. bbc.co.uk/news/live/clywqzwj…
I have only now seen that Fredric Jameson has just died. One of the rare thinkers with whom I have often felt that I was having an ongoing conversation. Always historicise! Vale Jameson.
Following a short trip to Berlin I listened to this great counter-factual podcast. Could German reunification have been handled differently - perhaps less as a 'fall' and more as a process of harmonisation? Did it happen the way it did because of a bureaucratic error?
Our latest historical counterfactual ⬇️
1989. How long could the East German regime have lasted? And what does the fate of non-European communist states tell us about how it could have gone very differently?
