Pat Murphy would have been the manager of the Mets beginning in the 2020 season, if it wasn’t for the Wilpons, who btw made Murphy fly coach all three times he interviewed.

i have thought about this tweet since he posted it.
Read it, and let it sink in.
He sold ALL of the PSA slabs he had and NO SGC/BGS.
Hate PSA all you want, but they are what the people want.

The dodgers getting swept is the most embarrassing elimination in mlb history. You spent over one billion dollars to sign a bunch of all mlb ring chasers with fraudulent insurance premium money, just to lose 4 straight to a small market team with practically all homegrown talent

This is what “run it back with the core” looks like once the contention window starts closing. This is exactly what Stearns was trying to avoid.
The Phillies just got knocked out of the Wild Card by the Braves. They have not won a postseason series since 2023. They have now lost four postseason series in a row. In 2027, Harper, Schwarber, and Turner are all entering their age-34 seasons. Wheeler and Realmuto will be 36. Nola will be 34.
Nola is still owed about $24.6 million a year through 2030, and he is already a bad pitcher. Turner is locked in through 2033, Harper is locked in through 2031, and Schwarber is locked in through 2030. All three are owed a ton of money.
Harper, Turner, and Schwarber all have no-trade clauses. Philly cannot move the expensive guys, and it cannot get younger around them without eating money. That is a top-five payroll for an aging team with a closing contention window. They needed Game 162 just to sneak into the sixth seed, then lost in three. Not a good spot to be in.
That was the path the Mets were on. When Stearns took over after 2023, the core was 29-year-old Alonso, 30-year-old Lindor, 30-year-old Díaz, 31-year-old Nimmo, and 32-year-old McNeil, with no starter in the group. Extend that group and pay them into their mid-30s, and you end up exactly where Philadelphia is currently.
Instead, the core is Ewing at 21, Benge at 23, McLean at 24, Scott and Soto at 27, Bichette at 28, and Lindor at 33. Other than Lindor, nobody in that group is older than 28.
The Mets missed the playoffs while most of that group was either hurt or still coming up as prospects. That is the cost of the reset. The alternative was becoming the Phillies: old, expensive, stuck, and still not a World Series team.
Philly did the thing fans always say they want. They kept the guys, paid them, and ran it back. Now the contention window is narrowing and the books are frozen. Stearns took the hit now so the Mets are not dealing with this in a couple of years.

When David Stearns took over in 2024, the core was:
29-year-old Pete Alonso
30-year-old Francisco Lindor
30-year-old Edwin Díaz
31-year-old Brandon Nimmo
32-year-old Jeff McNeil
The Mets had a terrible farm and an organization that couldn’t develop anyone. There wasn’t even a single starting pitcher in that core.
In 2026, less than three full seasons later, that core is now:
21-year-old A.J. Ewing
23-year-old Carson Benge
24-year-old Nolan McLean
27-year-old Christian Scott
27-year-old Juan Soto
28-year-old Bo Bichette
32-year-old Francisco Lindor
Other than Lindor, the oldest guy in that group is 28. The youngest is 21. When Stearns took over the youngest in that group was 29 years old! Now the organization can actually develop players and has one of the better farm systems in baseball.
Stearns reset a core that made the playoffs twice in six years — ONCE UNDER HIM! Alonso, Nimmo, and McNeil were not even why the Mets made the playoffs in 2024. Instead they were a big reason that team was fighting until the very last day of the season to clinch. Lindor along with the players Stearns put around them carried that team into the playoffs while those other guys all had down years.
Yet fans will still tell you Stearns has done an awful job. Almost every other team in baseball would take him tomorrow. Claiming he has run the Mets into the ground and that he’s a total disaster is dishonest and irrational. Thinking he hasn’t built this roster to be a future consistent contender just means you’re not watching or you’re out of touch. It’s egregious.
Missing the playoffs one year into a core reset is not some unprecedented disaster. Especially when most of the team’s core was either hurt or in the minors during this season other than Bichette, McLean, and Benge. Missing the playoffs happens to a lot of teams when they move on and stop running it back with a stale, aging group and actually start focusing on their future building the next core.
The other option was keeping a group that was only getting older and punting the future. That tradeoff makes no sense. This is the most realistic way to build a World Series contender. Especially one that can compete year after year.
