Two of my favorite moments/quotes in a story full of crazy ones. “Here comes No. 5” is amazing lmfao
The hidden world inside NFL headsets is as complex and strategic as it is chaotic: a textured audio landscape of intense competition, stress, dramatically shifting emotions, unwritten rules and even absurdity.
@JourdanRodrigue and @SandoNFL pull back the curtain on NFL headsets: nyti.ms/4ibIpSK
Sean Mannion said Jalen Hurts has "been around." He expects Hurts will be a resource for Tanner McKee this season.
"He's got a ton of starts in this league, especially going against a slate of division opponents coming up. He's played against these guys a bunch. I know Tanner's been around for that too, but I think the insight that you have from being on field is so valuable. Jalen's been through the fire of the regular season and Tanner I think it was his third start last week. I think just any veteran quarterback, because that's what Jalen is, there's always going to be insight in terms of, 'Hey, this is how the preparation for a Monday night game week can look. This how you can use your extra time. Hey, we played Dallas last year. These were the things I felt in my preparation there. These are some of my old notes.' There's so much insight to be gained from a quarterback with Jalen's experience. I know Tanner, Jalen, Cole [Payton], adding Joe [Milton] to the mix, these guys all work really, really well with one another in that QB room. That makes it fun to be around on a day-to-day basis. It's just the game experience and the insight of playing specifically these upcoming opponents. I think Jalen will be able to give Tanner some great help there."
Vic Fangio on Kenny Moore taking over at safety: "Just that Marcus hadn't been playing. Michael's hurt. He's not even active.Kenny''s been doing a good job in practice and did a good job in the previous game when he was thrown in there without a whole lot of work, so I just decided to go with him. He did a fine job.
"...Just Kenny's got good instincts, good football savviness to him. Although I don't think he's ever played safety prior to being here, he's done a good job with it because it's not an easy transition, and I just think he'll continue to get better."
Vic Fangio said Cooper DeJean is "playing good overall."
Asked about missed tackles, Fangio said: "There's just been a few more than usual. He did get that stinger when he had to come out of the Rams game, I believe it was. I think that's affected him a little bit."

My column on the mishandling of the Jalen Hurts situation, and the NFL's condescending response. Free to read at @TheAthletic

Sean Mannion on the offense: "You look at a lot of things that we need to improve, and I think they're totally fixable. It's a double-edged sword, right? You look at that, and you can get frustrated by it. You can also look at that and put a silver lining on and say, 'Man, if we just handled our simple stuff, we're going to yield a better result.'"
Sean Mannion on Tanner McKee: "He's been getting better and better. ...We had a competition through the offseason, in training camp, but we had we had six weeks of the regular season of practice and the guy's been improving.
"I think he's really sharp mentally. He's accurate. He gets the ball out of his hands quickly. I think he does all the things that yoy ask at the quarterback in terms of his pre-snap operation and being able to use his cadence, being able to handle things at the line of scrimmage if you need adjustments. So, I think he's strong in a lot of those areas, and I think it opens up some things for us offensively."

One point to add re: Tanner McKee under center — He doesn't have a lot of experience this area (and was inconsistent this summer), but it's notable that the most under-center passing plays Kellen Moore in any game in 2024 came in Tanner McKee's W18 start. So there was something there Moore tried tapping into.

For a year, @SandoNFL and I dove into what actually goes on in an NFL headset, and the vast networks that make every play possible - hidden in plain sight.
Then, the best visuals team in the world made it tangible.

NFL chief medical doc Allen Sills: "I have complete confidence in the Eagles medical staff and their handling of the situation. And I would characterize their work as very conservative, very patient-focus and appropriately guarded."
