Days 1 & 2 of Advanced DNS Training! 💻🌐 It’s been a busy start to the week at COZA House, with our participants getting hands-on with some of the more advanced elements of DNS. Over the first two days, students have worked through: 🔐 TSIG – exploring inbound and outbound zone transfers and verifying that transfers without the correct key fail. ⚙️ Dynamic Update – creating update keys, authorising them and working through secure DNS updates. 🔄 Delegation Synchronisation via DNS Update – checking what the agent holds for a zone, identifying what it is waiting for, publishing the required records and watching a delegation change make its way to the parent. Protecting South Africa's digital ecosystem—one domain at a time A recent phishing campaign attempted to impersonate RTMC/NaTIS using a fraudulent .co.za domain to deceive users into submitting payment information. Following detection, swift action was taken to suspend the malicious domain and coordinate with the relevant parties. The associated destination domain had already been disabled by its sponsoring registrar, ensuring the phishing infrastructure was no longer operational. This case highlights the importance of rapid collaboration across the domain name ecosystem in protecting Internet users from online fraud. Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. NaTIS or RTMC | Phishing Disrupted Every day, malicious actors attempt to exploit the trust users place in familiar brands and public institutions. In a recent incident, a fraudulent .co.za domain was used to impersonate RTMC/NaTIS in an attempt to harvest payment information from unsuspecting users. Once identified, immediate action was taken to suspend the domain, preventing further abuse. Verification also confirmed that the associated destination domain had already been disabled by its sponsoring registrar. While many of these interventions happen behind the scenes, each one contributes to a safer and more trusted Internet for South Africa. Cybercriminals are increasingly using fake websites that closely resemble trusted organisations to trick people into sharing banking details or making fraudulent payments. Before you take any action: Verify that you are visiting the official website. Check the domain name carefully—small spelling differences can indicate a fraudulent site. Never provide your banking details or make a payment until you have confirmed the website is legitimate. If in doubt, contact the organisation using its official contact details—not those contained in the message you received.
