📝From ISIS Brides to Balochistan: How Female Terror Networks Thrive Unchecked For years, global discourse underestimated the operational role of women in terrorist organisations, framing them as victims or passive jihadi brides. The Islamic State - ISIS shattered this misconception. Its female networks were sophisticated, hierarchical and integral to the group’s survival. They enforced moral codes, conducted intelligence operations, oversaw the management of enslaved women, indoctrinated children and even executed suicide attacks. The Al‑Khansaa Brigade, established in Raqqa around 2014, demonstrated remarkable operational sophistication. Women were active agents, recruiting, radicalising and justifying violence. The brigade enforced its interpretation of Sharia law, carried out surveillance and punishments and controlled the Sabaya, Yazidi women and girls captured and held as sex slaves. Western recruits dominated top leadership positions, overseeing local women and directing both domestic and intelligence operations. Hierarchies were clear, foreign women commanded respect and resources, local women executed orders and enslaved women performed labour and were coerced into complicity. Digital propaganda extended their influence. Women operated systematically across Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and Telegram, deliberately targeting Western audiences with messages of sisterhood and empowerment. Indoctrination reached across generations. The children of fighters known as the Cubs of the Caliphate were raised in extremist ideology. Amid the territorial collapse of ISIS, female operatives assumed critical command functions. They covertly laundered and directed financial assets, managed complex logistics and engaged in direct kinetic operations executing suicide attacks during the group’s final stand in Baghouz in 2019. This operational blueprint is now mirrored in Balochistan under the leadership of Mahrang Baloch. The daughter of Abdul Ghaffar Langove, a BLA militant killed in an internal clash, Mahrang was politically launched during the 2014 protests by Mama Qadeer. Together with Bebo Baloch, Sammi Deen and Gulzadi Baloch, she allegedly established a female wing that exceeds conventional protest politics. Security narratives suggest this network operates as a structured cartel orchestrating blackmail, extortion, financial coordination, intelligence collection and even the preparation of suicide operatives. Universities reportedly became recruiting grounds. Young women were allegedly lured through romantic entanglements, drugged, recorded and coerced into compliance. Once trapped, they provided logistical support, real-time intelligence on sensitive locations, transferred funds in accordance with internal rank structures and in some cases, were groomed to carry out suicide attacks. Operational roles appear stratified, echoing ISIS hierarchies Mahrang and top leaders supervise, experienced operatives manage blackmail and funds and coerced participants perform intelligence or attack functions. Arrests illustrate the network’s depth. Gulzadi Baloch, apprehended on Brewery Road, was reportedly central to planning the Jaffer Express attack alongside her brother Aga Mohammad and a cousin. Intelligence indicates that female operatives, operating in plain sight, coordinated travel records, route intelligence and financial movements. Wadood, brother of Gulzadi Baloch, has also been linked to a suicide attack in Bolan, contradicting public narratives that portray him as missing or innocent.
