Stop saying "I don't know" when you get put on the spot in a meeting.
It doesn't make you look honest. It destroys your credibility and makes you look unprepared.
A former McKinsey consultant taught me the "Bridging Technique."
Here are 5 phrases to use when you don't have the answer: π
5/ The Confidence Deferral
Instead of: "I don't know the answer to that."
Say: "I don't have the exact sheet in front of me, but based on current trends, we are tracking toward [General Answer]. I'll confirm the specific details right after the call."
Why it works: You still deliver value while maintaining absolute authority.
Mid-level employees panic when they lack information. Executives control the framing.
β’ Scope Pivot -> Promising precision
β’ Discovery Frame -> Leading the investigation
β’ Team Deflection -> Facilitating the expert
β’ Clarification Stall -> Buying time
β’ Confidence Deferral -> Delivering partial value
Bookmark these scripts for your next big meeting so you never get caught off guard again.
