Election day, he shouted "A socialist for mayor!" The comrade got elected He happy, was for fair But after the election He got an an awful shock A great big socialistic bull Did rap him on his block And Comrade Block did sob "I helped him get his job!"

LLMs are literally next token predictors. That's not an insult or a quip. That's just a description of how their architecture works. I very open to people's arguments about them having consciousness. I will always read your thoughts with an open mind but this statement just seems weird... because... It's almost like he's saying they're *not* "next token predictors" but that is literally how the architecture works for large language models of today.
Replying to @andrewthesmart
because I constantly run into people who discount the capabilities of AI systems on the basis that they're stochastic parrots or next-token predictors, and the use of this frame causes people to materially underestimate what AI systems can/can't do

imagine you went to class and the only thing the professor taught in class was a theorem statement, a bunch of nonsense not even the professor understands, and a lean certificate saying it's true would you learn anything?
Striking how much of a fall in esteem is happening to pure mathematics because of this ill-conceived letter. Both the average scientist and the layperson can see: if your famous problems aren't ones that you really want to the answers to, something's wrong.

I hear the next generation of models may even be able to explain to tech bros what “ontological” means
No one is ready for what’s coming. The next generation of models will be an ontological shock.

TimeCube guy made this exact argument for why MIT needed to let him teach a course on the TimeCube
True both ways: folks who understand why lack of race/gender diversity is a problem, and how group dynamics reinforce skews even without formal exclusion rules, suddenly start sounding like southern planters defending Jim Crow when it comes to conservative absence from academia

This propagandizing against air conditioning is going to exacerbate an *already* fatal public health problem in Europe. Burning fuel for heat & lack of sufficient insulation of older buildings are the real problems. Reversible heat pumps/aircon should be widely implemented ASAP!

OK. Pretend economics IS a science. "Rent control is bad" could not be a finding of ANY science bc it's a value judgement. "Global warming is bad" is not a finding of climate science. At best you'd get "RC causes a 20% drop in renter mobility" followed by "and I think that's bad"

But then you must explain *why* these alleged effects are (1) actually bad, AND (2) not an effect of the more proximate cause (i.e. not a direct byproduct of rents being lower/staying the same/increasing more slowly). B/c without (2) your position is really "lower rents are bad"

Regarding (1): there's a very convincing case to be made that people being priced out of their homes & forced to move even though they do not want to is BAD. And, if that 20% drop in renter mobility is actually a drop in people priced out of their homes, it sounds pretty good tbh
