We are in deep, deep trouble. A reader wrote in to me this week saying that they wouldn't read my Trump corruption story because ChatGPT "fact-checked the piece" and informed them most of it was false. Among other things, ChatGPT told them that there is no Iran war, Jared Kushner is not a negotiator in the war, Qatar never offered Trump a $400 million plane, George Santos wasn't pardoned, the NYTimes did not report on Syrian billionaires lobbying Trump for sanctions relief, Trump never launched a meme coin, and World Liberty Financial (the Trump family crypto firm) doesn't exist. Of course, all of these things ARE real, do exist, and are happening right now. Apparently, the reader copy and pasted the text of my story into ChatGPT, and without the links ChatGPT couldn't confirm any of it. Once the reader sent ChatGPT the link to the story, it ended up concluding all the facts were correct. How many people simply don't know how to use AI and are offloading all their thinking? It's a terrifying thought. And a totally new frontier of reality to navigate.

Maybe the most important thing to understand about the way meat is produced: Its shocking inefficiency. To produce 1 calorie of chicken, it takes about 9 calories of feed. And chicken is the most efficient animal we eat. Beef is even less efficient. We grow crops like corn and soy. We feed those crops to animals. More than 9 out of 10 of those calories are burned off by farm animals, simply existing. Since 1991, global meat consumption has more than doubled. That inexorable rise in consumption, every single year, will continue. That inefficiency is the root of meat’s contribution to hunger and a range of environmental harms, including climate change. I dive into the macroeconomics of meat in chapters 1 and 2 of my new book Meat. Find out more: MeatBook.org

83% of Americans support voter ID, including 71% of Democrats and 76% of black voters. BUT the federal policy Trump and the GOP are pushing goes FAR beyond Voter ID. It demands DOCUMENTARY PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP. That means your driver's license isn't good enough. Your REAL ID isn't good enough. You need a BIRTH CERTIFICATE or PASSPORT — which 21 million Americans don't have handy.  That's not voter ID. That's a wholly different policy regime that requires adequate time and resources to implement properly — or millions of lawful voters will be unfairly barred from the ballot booth.

🐟 From chapter 2 of my new book Meat, a section called “Poisoned Seafood: Mercury and Microplastics”: "Perhaps the scariest example of meat contamination is mercury in seafood, which can have very quick adverse impacts on brain function. I’m still surprised by how few people know that human mercury exposure is almost entirely a function of fish consumption and that most fish contain toxic mercury. . ." The effects are FAST: I tell the story of a kid who went from honors student and star athlete to remedial classes and inability to catch a football, EPA estimates of 10s of thousands of learning disabilities/year from in utero mercury poisoning, and more. Lots more in the book, which @PublishersWkly lists as a top 10 new release in science ("This packed account makes food science feel like an urgent and essential undertaking"): amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/…

Here’s the land math most climate conversations miss: According to two separate analyses, at 50% adoption, alternative proteins could free up ~640–650 million hectares of land—currently used for grazing animals or growing feed for chickens, pigs, and farmed fish. That’s because plant-based chicken requires one-sixth the land of conventional chicken, and cultivated chicken requires one-third the land. Scaling that up pays massive land dividends. On a business-as-usual upward meat consumption trajectory, we’ll need 3 billion more hectares of land, absent significant yield improvements. That would mean eliminating the world’s forests and savannas, according to the World Resources Institute. That’s land that could support forests, store carbon, protect biodiversity, and reduce pressure to clear new acreage. This is why the protein transition isn’t just about emissions. It’s about land—and what becomes possible once land pressure drops. MEAT is available NOW ➡️ buff.ly/n9Vqi6N

Please never normalize the fact that over 24 hours later, we still don't know anything about the ICE agents who killed Alex Pretti. No names. No details. Because they are masked, anonymous, and being protected by the state.

Most of us are just interpreting the images and videos that our algorithm serves us. (Few people outside of Minneapolis have a truly comprehensive view of what is happening there.) That said: here is what I am seeing on MY phone. … A rowdy but overwhelmingly NONVIOLENT protest movement VERSUS overwhelmingly lawless and VIOLENT government agents from ICE … Courageous citizen journalists VERSUS cowardly, masked bullies. … Government LIES about an armed threat to cops VERSUS the TRUTH from citizen cell phones proving the man posed no threat when he was shot. … If your phone is showing you something radically different, please let me know. But a country in which immigration officials keep gunning down US citizens — knowing that the federal government will always side with its armed agents against any citizen — is hard to describe as a nation of laws.

The vast majority of meat and dairy produced in America come from animals who lived on factory farms. There are some commendable aspects of the new dietary guidelines, but urging more meat & dairy consumption aren’t among them. newsweek.com/experts-behind-…

I get that Ross's past trauma (being dragged by a car in another incident) might play a role in nudging him toward this response. But @TheJusticeDept rules seem clear: "Firearms may not be discharged solely to disable moving vehicles. Specifically, firearms may not be discharged at a moving vehicle unless: (1) a person in the vehicle is threatening the officer or another person with deadly force by means other than the vehicle; or (2) the vehicle is operated in a manner that threatens to cause death or serious physical injury to the officer or others, and no other objectively reasonable means of defense appear to exist, which includes moving out of the path of the vehicle." justice.gov/jm/1-16000-depar…

Amazon has a special sale on my book, THE SOLUTIONARY WAY. The Kindle version is just $1 and the print version is $9.99. Heading into the new year with a book to guide strategic, compassionate, solutionary action in 2026 is a good thing, right? Poppy thinks so. @Revkin
