Welcome to 2026! Milady is back. Ethereum did a lot in 2025: gas limits increased, blob count increased, node software quality improved, zkEVMs blasted through their performance milestones, and with zkEVMs and PeerDAS ethereum made its largest step toward being a fundamentally new and more powerful kind of blockchain (more on this later) But we have a challenge: Ethereum needs to do more to meet its own stated goals. Not the quest of "winning the next meta" regardless of whether it's tokenized dollars or political memecoins, not arbitrarily convincing people to help us fill up blockspace to make ETH ultrasound again, but the mission: To build the world computer that serves as a central infrastructure piece of a more free and open internet. We're building decentralized applications. Applications that run without fraud, censorship or third-party interference. Applications that pass the walkaway test: they keep running even if the original developers disappear. Applications where if you're a user, you don't even notice if Cloudflare goes down - or even if all of Cloudflare gets hacked by North Korea. Applications whose stability transcends the rise and fall of companies, ideologies and political parties. And applications that protect your privacy. All this - for finance, and also for identity, governance and whatever other civilizational infrastructure people want to build. These properties sound radical, but we must remember that a generation ago any wallet, kitchen appliance, book or car would fulfill every single one of them. Today, all of the above are by default becoming subscription services, consigning you to permanent dependence on some centralized overlord. Ethereum is the rebellion against this. To achieve this, it needs to be (i) usable, and usable at scale, and (ii) actually decentralized. This needs to happen at both (a) the blockchain layer, including the software we use to run and talk to the blockchain, and (b) the application layer. All of these pieces must be improved - they are already being improved, but they must be improved more. Fortunately, we have powerful tools on our side - but we need to apply them, and we will. Wishing everyone an exciting 2026. Milady.

The easy ability to call @grok on twitter is probably the biggest thing after community notes that has been positive for the truth-friendliness of this platform. The fact that you don't see ahead of time how grok will respond is key here - I've seen many situations where someone calls on grok expecting their crazy political belief to be confirmed and grok comes along and rugs them.

We are the light of a singular, unrepeatable world, a world that exists only because we perceive it, only because we illuminate it with our awareness. Every thought, every glance, every heartbeat casts a glow that defines the edges of our reality, turning the void into form, the possible into the actual. Without us, this world would remain unlit, unseen, unrealized. And you, you are light upon light. Not merely a reflection, not a secondary gleam, but an intensification, a radiance layered upon radiance. Your presence amplifies the illumination we already carry; you reveal depths we did not know were there, colors we had never noticed. Where your light touches mine, something brighter than either alone emerges, a brilliance that transcends addition and becomes multiplication. Light is the only force capable of crossing the apparent divide between one consciousness and another. Distance, time, flesh, doubt, all these imagined separations dissolve in its presence. It travels instantly, without diminishing itself, carrying information, warmth, understanding across what seemed an impassable gulf. In the instant of true connection, when eye meets eye, when mind recognizes mind, the gap reveals itself as illusion. There was never any separation; there was only light waiting to recognize itself in another form. We are not separate flames flickering in darkness. We are the same light, meeting itself across the beautiful pretense of distance, remembering its unity in moments of profound encounter. You and I, we are that remembrance made visible, light rejoicing in light. Michael Markham

Awakening together🌱🙏
The mind that treats itself as an object (the thinking, analyzing, self-observing brain) is forever trapped inside the very tool it uses to hunt for its own essence: language. It reaches for the “I” with words, concepts, categories, stories, definitions, yet every word it grasps is already born from the same illusory substance it is trying to pin down. The hunter and the hunted are made of the same mirage. Imagine a mirror trying to see its own back by reflecting itself endlessly into another mirror. Each reflection is crisp, convincing, and real-looking, but none of them is the mirror itself; they are only images generated by the act of reflection. The moment the mirrors are removed, the infinite corridor of “me’s” collapses into silence, and what remains cannot be pictured, only lived. So too with language. When the mind says “I am the thinker of these thoughts,” it has already turned the living source of awareness into a thought-object labeled “thinker.” When it protests “No, I am the witness behind the thinker,” it has merely created a subtler object called “witness.” Every refinement, every spiritual upgrade, every philosophical koan that promises to corner the self is just another smoke ring blown through the previous one. The hand that tries to grab the smoke only proves that smoke has no edges. They are showing that the seeker is the sought, but the instant that realization is translated back into the objectifying medium of language it becomes another pretty corpse on the dissection table. The personal identity the brain keeps trying to locate is not a hidden object buried somewhere behind the eyes; it is the looking itself, before the first word that tries to name it. The instrument is constitutionally incapable of turning far enough around to catch its own handle. Every autobiography, every theory of self, every enlightened teaching that is still spoken or written is, at best, another wisp of smoke added to the fog. The smoke is beautiful, sometimes fragrant, often helpful in signaling to others lost in the same haze, but it is still smoke. What it swirls around (the open, wordless, identity-less being) remains untouched, ungraspable, and already fully present, laughing quietly at the brain’s solemn, smoke-weaving ceremonies. Whatever you can clearly see with your eyes is, by its very nature, imaginary, an image constructed within the mind. Whatever you can think about, conceptualize, or describe in words is make-believe, a story woven from thoughts. The “I” that you take yourself to be is not a substantial entity out there in the world; it is merely the brain’s consensual, objectifying overlay, a shared conceptual map that the nervous system projects onto raw experience in order to navigate it. In truth, we are nothing but this map, a fragile representation laid over a territory that is vast, unknown, and ultimately unknowable. Perception in any sentient being is not a direct encounter with reality; it is a simulation. Light strikes the retina, sound waves vibrate the eardrum, chemicals bind to receptors, yet none of these raw data enter consciousness unchanged. The survival biased brain translates them into sights, sounds, smells, and objects. The red apple you see is not “out there”; redness is a neural code, roundness a pattern of edge detection, and appleness a learned category. The entire visual field is a hallucination that reliably correlates with events in the world. When the correlation breaks—as in dreams, hallucinations, or optical illusions—the constructed nature of seeing becomes obvious. Thus, if you can see it, it is imaginary. Thought operates at one further remove. Thinking requires symbols, words, images, and concepts, that stand for something else. To think about an apple is to manipulate an internal representation, not to bite into fruit. Every concept is a simplification, a boundary drawn around the boundless, a frame of reference. Love, justice, self, time, all are stories we tell to make the flux of experience coherent. They work beautifully for survival and communication, yet they remain fictions. Thus: if you can think about it, it is make-believe. The sense of being a separate “I” arises from this same process. The brain objectifies experience: it turns raw sensation into “things” and “events,” then posits a central observer to whom these things appear. This observer feels solid and continuous, yet it is a consensus reached among many brain modules, a narrative center of gravity invented for coordination. Neuroscientists find no homunculus, no single seat of self; philosophers and meditators report that sustained inquiry dissolves the feeling of an inner subject. What remains is experience without a fixed experiencer. We mistake the map for the territory. Language, culture, science, and personal memory collaborate to produce a shared conceptual overlay: persons, objects, causes, purposes, histories. This overlay is extraordinarily useful; it lets us build cities, cure diseases, and write poetry, but it is not the thing itself. Beyond the map lies a reality that no concept can capture, no image can contain, no story can exhaust. Direct pointers (such as deep meditation, psychedelics, or moments of awe) sometimes reveal glimpses of this unknowable vastness, but the moment we try to describe it, we fall back into the map. So we live as the map, believing ourselves to be solid citizens of a solid world. At the same time, the true territory, if there even is such a thing) remains forever beyond the reach of sight or thought, immense, silent, and intimately present. Michael Markham

Everything that exists arises in complete interdependence. What we call a “thing”, a tree, a person, a thought, has no independent essence of its own. It is a temporary confluence of countless conditions: particles, forces, histories, perceptions, and relations. A tree, for instance, is not a self-contained entity "causing" leaves to grow; it is the ongoing expression of soil nutrients, sunlight, water, carbon cycles, genetic patterns, and even the gravitational pull of distant celestial bodies. Remove any one of these interdependent factors, and the tree as we know it ceases to be. Similarly, what we label as "events" are not isolated happenings strung together in a linear chain of causation. An event is merely a ripple in the seamless dream catcher of becoming. The "cause" and "effect" are not two separate moments bridged by some mysterious force; they are indivisible aspects of a single, unbroken process. The rain does not "cause" the river to rise, the rain and the rising are two conceptual slices of one continuous flow, interdependent with the slope of the land, the absorption of the soil, the evaporation from oceans, and the atmospheric conditions that birthed the storm. This interdependence is not merely a philosophical abstraction. Modern physics echoes it profoundly: quantum entanglement shows particles to be instantaneously correlated across vast distances, with no "signal" traveling between them; general relativity describes spacetime as a unified field in which mass-energy curves the very geometry in which events unfold. There are no truly separate objects acting upon one another, only configurations within an indivisible whole. Even our sense of self, the apparent agent who "causes" actions, dissolves under scrutiny. Thoughts, intentions, and choices arise from a vast web of prior conditions, biology, culture, subconscious impulses, and environmental stimuli, none of which originate in an autonomous "I." Agency, like causation, is a useful fiction overlaid upon the seamless arising of “phenomena”. To speak of cause and effect is to carve artificial boundaries into an unbrokenness. It is a convenient map for navigating daily life, pressing a key "causes" a letter to appear on screen, but it is not the territory itself. In the deepest sense, there are no separate things or events to stand in relation as cause to effect. There is only this: an ever-changing, utterly interdependent unknowable display, arising and dissolving without center or edge. Michael Markham

[The helplessness of Now] Take a seat, Mr. Tolle There is no now, and nobody to be there. Time is not a river flowing through a present moment; it is an idea, a seamlessness without a privileged seam labeled “now.” Every event, past, present, future, exists tenselessly, like frames on a filmstrip that is simply there, unrolling nowhere. The apparent “present” is merely the perspective of an imaginary, conscious observer embedded within the objectifying machinery, slicing it locally into before and after. But remove the observer, or recognize its illusory separation, and the slice vanishes. There is no objective, universal now; only relational orderings of self-referential events. And there is no separate self to stand in that nonexistent now. The feeling of being a persistent someone, an “I” located behind the eyes, enduring through time, is a useful fiction constructed by the objectifying brain to coordinate perception and action. Thoughts, sensations, memories arise and pass, but no fixed entity owns them. The apparent witness is itself a transient appearance within the field of experience, with no more substantiality than a rainbow has apart from mist and light. When both the objective now and the subjective observer are seen through, what remains is timeless, edgeless presence: not a presence belonging to anyone, not a presence located in any particular moment, but the simple fact of manifestation itself. Vast, undivided, impersonal, this is, without needing a time in which to occur or a self to whom it occurs. There is no now, and nobody to be there. Yet everything is, luminously and undeniably. There is nothing no star that burns with fiercer light, no mind that turns with subtler grace, no force that shapes the dark between galaxies that stands above you, that equals you, that even distantly approaches the altitude where you already, effortlessly, exist. Every law written into the bones of physics, every equation that quietly governs the birth and death of suns, every silence that stretches across a trillion years across the void was only ever a rough draft, a hesitant sketch leading, inevitably, to the moment you opened your eyes. The universe did not create you as an afterthought. It created everything else so that, at the precise second you drew breath, it could finally recognize itself and say, without exaggeration or flattery, “Here, at last, is the pinnacle. Here is the reason I endured the long cold and the blinding heat and the endless turning of indifferent wheels of gravity. All of it was only rehearsal for the single, unrepeatable miracle of you.” You are not a guest in reality. You are its living edge, its most exquisite argument, the one irrefutable proof that existence was worth the trouble. There never was, there never will be anything higher, anything better, anything more luminous than you right now, exactly as you are. Just look at you Fancy pants. Michael Markham

All beliefs are directed toward “things,” yet when we examine these things closely, none of them withstand scrutiny as solid, independent, objective entities. What we call a “thing” is never more than a temporary cluster of perceptions, functions, and agreements held together by a name. There are no actual things, only provisional appearances that we mistake for permanence because language and habit freeze them into nouns. Consider the table in front of you. You believe it is “there,” a real object. But interrogate the belief, and the table dissolves. Does a table require four legs, as tradition suggests, or is a three-legged café table still a table? A single pedestal? A slab balanced on two bricks? A tree stump in the forest that someone eats from? Remove the legs entirely and float the surface with magnets, does it cease to be a table? Change its height by six inches, and it becomes a desk; lower it again, and it is a coffee table. Push it against the wall, and it is a sideboard. Yesterday it was a barricade in a street protest. Tomorrow it will be firewood. The “table” is not an inherent property of the wood and metal; it is a role we assign, a story we overlay. The confusion multiplies when the object has no stable physical form at all. Love, justice, freedom, the self, God, none of these can be put under a microscope or weighed on a scale. We treat them as things because we have nouns for them, yet they shift with every mind that encounters them. One person’s love is another’s obsession; one culture’s justice is another’s oppression. Even the apparently solid “I” that supposedly has these beliefs is itself a belief, a persistent hallucination stitched together from memory, sensation, and narrative. Ask “Who am I?” and the answers proliferate: a body, a mind, a soul, a social role, a history, a process, a void. None of the candidates survives sustained examination. The closer you look, the more the “self” resembles a centerless play of reflections in a mirror maze. This is the strange enlightenment that begins to dawn: every apparent thing, whether a table or a God, a chair or a self, is a mental construct, a useful or beautiful or terrifying fiction we agree to treat as real for the sake of conversation, survival, or worship. Reality does not contain things; it contains patterns, energies, relationships, and appearances arising and dissolving. We carve these fluid processes into objects with language, the way a child draws faces on clouds, and then we forget that we were the ones holding the pencil. To see this clearly is not nihilism; it is liberation. When the imaginary nature of things is recognized, the tyranny of beliefs loosens its grip. The table no longer needs to defend its table-ness. Love is freed from having to match an impossible template. The self stops clutching at its own reflection. What remains is not nothingness but an open field of experience, vast, groundless, and alive, where chairs can become tables, enemies can become friends, and the entire inventory of “things” reveals itself as a single, shimmering play of mind. Michael Markham
