ETHEREUM SWITCHED OFF THE MINING MACHINES FOR GOOD 🌱 When Ethereum moved from mining to staking in 2022, its yearly electricity use fell by more than 99.988%, according to the CCRI study cited on EthereumOrg. Every blockchain needs a way to agree on who adds the next block. Ethereum used to rely on mining, where fleets of powerful computers compete to solve puzzles, and that takes a lot of electricity. On September 15, 2022, Ethereum completed the Merge and switched to proof of stake. Instead of racing machines, validators lock up ETH as a security deposit and take turns proposing and checking blocks. The Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute estimates this cut yearly electricity use by more than 99.988% and the carbon footprint by about 99.992%, from 11,016,000 to 870 tonnes of CO2e. Today the whole global network runs on roughly 0.0026 TWh a year, a tiny sliver of what mining used to need. One upgrade, and a giant footprint shrank to almost nothing 🌍
