In March 1988, Thames Television’s This Week documented what Israel was doing in occupied Gaza during the First Intifada. Reporter Peter Gill showed Israeli soldiers beating Palestinian teenagers in the streets and entering homes under curfew to beat young men and their families. The policy, ordered by Defence Minister Yitzhak Rabin, was meant to crush resistance with “force, might, and beatings” instead of just bullets. A young Palestinian man in the report explained the result clearly: the beatings were supposed to frighten and deter them. Instead, they drove more young men into revolutionary activity. The uprising only grew. By the time of the broadcast, more than 70 Palestinians had already been killed. The film also covers cases of people beaten to death, including a 19-year-old Christian from Gaza. This is what military occupation looked like decades before the current genocide.
