The Persecution That Doesn’t Make the Headlines
I am a Muslim convert to Christianity. I lived for 15 years as a Christian believer in Morocco, much of that time in what we called the underground church.
Listen carefully, because this is what “moderate Islam” looked like for us:
Morocco is considered one of the most moderate Muslim countries. That is true compared with Mauritania and Libya, where converts from Islam face the death penalty, or Egypt, Jordan, Syria, the West Bank, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Pakistan, where converts face imprisonment, torture, intimidation, or severe persecution.
But here is the reality of “moderate” Morocco.
We gathered secretly in homes every Sunday because churches were for foreign Christians, not Moroccan converts. We sang in low voices so the neighbors would not hear us. We arrived two at a time to avoid suspicion. If anyone asked, we pretended it was simply a gathering of family and friends.
We baptized converts in bathtubs.
I was baptized in a bathtub myself. A missionary and a few Moroccan Christians were the only people present.
We kept our house churches small, usually fewer than twenty people. When they became too large, we split them. Christmas and a few special occasions were exceptions.
Police raided Christian gatherings, confiscated Christian materials, dragged believers to police stations, interrogated them, threatened them, and humiliated them with vulgar language.
Our children had to go to school and study Islam and memorize the Quran even though their parents were Christians.
We could not freely give our children Christian names. The government did not need to write “Christian names are forbidden” in bold letters. The authorities simply refused to register them.
Our marriages were treated as Islamic marriages under Sharia because the Moroccan state refused to recognize us for what we actually were: Moroccan Christians.
A Moroccan Christian woman could not simply marry a foreign Christian man as a Christian. He had to establish before the authorities that he was Muslim because, according to the government, she was still a Muslim.
The state decided our religion for us.
Even death did not end it.
When a Moroccan Christian died, he was buried in a Muslim cemetery under Islamic rituals because the government still considered him Muslim. I remember one Moroccan Christian who died in Tangier. We had to do the impossible to get his body to Ceuta so he could receive a Christian funeral.
Imagine having to smuggle your religious identity across a border just to be buried according to your own faith.
We could not establish our own legal Moroccan churches. We could not get permission to build even one church for Moroccan converts. Our house churches were illegal gatherings. We lived at the mercy of the police. Any meeting could be raided. Any neighbor could report us.
Foreign Christians had churches.
Moroccan Christians had secrecy, whispers, living rooms, bathtubs, police interrogations, and fear.
And then Muslims lecture the West about “Islamophobia.”
Spare me.

Morocco does not officially recognize or allow born-and-bred (native) citizens to legally identify or practice as Christians.
In practice, the legal and institutional framework only recognizes two native religious identities: Sunni Islam and Judaism. Because of this, anyone born to Moroccan Muslim parents is automatically categorized and treated as a Muslim under the law.
No legal Christian institutions for citizens: The official, registered churches in Morocco (such as Catholic or Protestant denominations) are legally reserved only for foreign residents and migrants. They are strictly prohibited from allowing native Moroccan citizens to attend services, be baptized, or join their congregations.
All native citizens (unless ethnically Jewish) are bound by the Islamic family code (Mudawana). This means native Christians cannot legally have a Christian marriage, pass on inheritances outside of Islamic law, or bury their dead in Christian cemeteries.

Pattern of the thoughts:
1. Strategic instrumentalism: democracy treated as temporary tool for power, not lasting reciprocal system.
2. Ideological absolutism: one legal-moral order viewed as absolute and superior.
3. Pragmatic exploitation of liberal procedures to install a closed system rejecting equal rights and religious freedom for outsiders.
4. Recurring across absolutist movements that enter pluralist frameworks intending to shut them down.
Replying to @_CarlMoney @Boss_Aleeyu
This pattern is strategic instrumentalism. Democracy is used as a temporary vehicle to acquire power, not accepted as a lasting reciprocal framework. Psychologically it rests on ideological absolutism: when one legal-moral order is treated as absolute and superior, employing open liberal procedures becomes a pragmatic step toward installing a system that rejects equal rights and religious freedom for outsiders. The same logic appears across many absolutist movements that enter pluralist systems intending to close them.

A Muslim told me, “If you actually followed your Bible, you wouldn’t worship Jesus as God.”
So I asked him a simple question: “According to the Bible, what was the major reason Jesus was killed?”
He replied, “I don’t believe Jesus was killed. Allah raised him up.”
I said, “Brother, please, we’re discussing the Bible, not the Quran. You told me that if I followed my Bible, I wouldn’t worship Jesus as God. So, according to that same Bible, why was Jesus killed?”
He came back with, “Your Bible is corrupted. Jesus wasn’t killed. Allah raised him up.”
I said, “Not the Quran again! We’re discussing the Bible. Just answer the question!”
Then came another escape route: “Your Bible is corrupted. You don’t even know the authors. They are anonymous. Jesus didn’t write the Bible.”
At this point, I decided to make things easier for him. I said, “Okay, for the sake of argument, let’s assume I accept all that. But according to the Bible, why was Jesus killed?”
His answer? “The Jews always killed the prophets God sent to them. Jesus was killed because He told them to return to the worship of the one true God.”
I asked, “Where exactly does the Bible say that was the major reason?”
He replied, “That’s what the prophets were killed for!”
I mean, are we having a Bible discussion or a game of religious hide-and-seek? 😂
Do you see the irony? He couldn’t answer a straightforward question about the very Bible he accused me of not following. Instead, he kept changing the subject whenever the answer became uncomfortable.
According to the biblical account, one of the central accusations against Jesus was blasphemy because of His divine claims.
John 10:30–33 makes this particularly clear. Jesus said, “I and My Father are one.” The Jews picked up stones to stone Him, explaining that it was because He, being a man, made Himself God.
John 5:18 also records that they sought to kill Him because He called God His Father, making Himself equal with God.
So, if you tell me to follow the Bible, please don’t be surprised when I actually follow what it says!
The Bible presents Jesus as the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:1, 14).
He was truly human and truly God.

During the fall of Constantinople, many Christians took refuge in the churches with the idea that the Muslim Turks would recognise that the sacred buildings should afford sanctuary. Most of them ran to the great church of Hagia Sophia. The Greek historian Doukas, one of the most important sources for those events, writes that Christians "had only rendered their capture more easy by seeking all together refuge inside the Church".
The great crowd were taken as in a drag-net, says another historian, Critobulus. The Muslims entered Hagia Sophia after breaking the doors. Christian prisoners were tied or chained together and any resistance offered was at once overcome. Some were taken to the Turkish ships, others to the camp, and the loot collected was dealt with in the same manner. Turks were arguing for the possession of the most beautiful women.
Hagiographies were torn down and burnt. The greatest misfortune of all, says Phrantzes, another important historian who was an eyewitness, was to see the Temple of the Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia), the Earthly Heaven, the Throne of the Glory of God, defiled by these miscreant barbarians.
The Muslim Turks didn't stop there. They destroyed and disappeared books from the libraries. Books with knowledge and about history and sciences.
For Islam any other books except the Koran (Quran) was anti-Islamic and any book that contradicts its teaching ought to be destroyed. The ignorant fanatical masses of Muslims were destroying and burning or stealing books as they did in the Library of Alexandria. The only value of books was the amount for which they could be sold.
Constantinople, Greece and the whole region of Eastern Roman Empire, after the Fall and Ottoman slavery, it went from the most advanced people to the most undeveloped. Sciences and philosophy were forbidden under the Islamic law.
Historian Critobulus says that not only the holy and religious books, but also those treating of profane sciences and of philosophy, were either thrown into the fire or trampled irreverently under foot, but that the greater part were sold, not for the sake of the price but in mockery, for two or three pence or even farthings.
The ships of the Turkish fleet had among their cargo, says Ducas, an innumerable quantity of books. In the booty collected by the Turks they were so plentiful and cheap, that for a nummus, probably worth sixpence, ten volumes were sold containing the works of Plato and Aristotle, treatises on theology and other sciences.
The sack of Constantinople lasted 3 days.
Hoca Sadeddin Efendi, in his work The Crown of Histories (Tacü’t-Tevarih), one of the most fundamental, detailed, and renowned Ottoman sources on the Fall of Constantinople, first affirms that the soldiers of Islam "acted in accordance with the precept, ‘Slaughter their aged and capture their youth.’" He then adds, in the characteristic ornate style of Ottoman historians:
"For three days and nights there was, with the imperial permission, a general sack, and the victorious troops, through the richness of the spoil, entwined the arm of possession round the neck of their desires, and by binding the lustre of their hearts to the locks of the damsels, beautiful as houris, and by the sight of the sweetly smiling fair ones, they made the eye of their hopes the participator in their good fortune."
Leonard states that sixty thousand captives were bound together preparatory to their final distribution.
Critobulus, writing some years afterwards, estimates that the number of Greeks and Italians killed during the siege and after the capture was four thousand, that five hundred of the army and upwards of fifty thousand of the rest of the population were reduced to slavery.
Mehmed, called for an imam, who by his orders ascended the pulpit and made the declaration of Mohammedanism (Islamic faith). It was that moment, when the most important Church of Christianity, the Hagia Sophia, converted into a mosque.
Mehmed slaughtered, raped, burned, and enslaved so many of Constantinople’s Greeks that the city had to be repopulated, including with Greeks brought from elsewhere. He ordered five thousand families sent from the provinces and the walls repaired. Ducas records that these families, drawn under threat of death from Trebizond, Sinope, and Asprocastron, included masons and lime-burners to build the city. Have you ever wondered why Ottoman buildings are similar to Byzantine architecture?
65 years after the Fall of Constantinople, Sultan Selim I Yavuz, grandson of Mehmed "the Conqueror" and father of Suleiman, decided to definitively abolish the Patriarchate of Constantinople during the patriarchate of Theoleptos I, and to slaughter all the subjugated Greek Christians (rayah) of the empire who refused to convert to Mohammedanism and Islam.
Ottoman expansion was primarily a result of racial and religious grand plan.
The conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque and Muslims praying in a building that does not belong to their historical or civilizational heritage, is the clearest proof that Islam is a barbaric religion that does not create, but only conquers and destroys.

Early Christians baffled the Roman world because their counter-cultural way of life, radical compassion, and refusal to conform to civic religion turned traditional Roman values upside down...
Christians worshipped only one God and refused to burn incense to Caesar or participate in state polytheistic rituals. Romans viewed this as a dangerous form of atheism and treason that could anger the gods and destabilize the empire. Roman society was deeply hierarchical and honor-driven, built on class, slavery, and status. Christians treated slaves, masters, the poor, and elites as spiritual equals before Christ. Romans routinely exposed unwanted or disabled infants to die of exposure. Christians actively combed public dumpsters and streets to rescue these babies and raise them as their own—an act so foreign to Romans that they falsely accused Christians of bizarre rituals like child sacrifice. While Roman culture prized honor, strength, and retribution against enemies, Christians practiced radical forgiveness and charity. They cared for widows, orphans, the poor, and even plague victims regardless of whether they were believers, prompting early writers like Tertullian to note observers saying, "See how they love one another!" Unlike other oppressed groups or zealots who fought the Roman legions with the sword, Christians refused violent revolution. When dragged before magistrates or executed in the arenas, many faced death with calm resolve or song rather than armed resistance, which baffled authorities who only understood power backed by military might.
. . .
Early Christians in Roman Empire showed a high level of devotion to their God that made their persecution backfire. On many occasions, the martyrs sang while awaiting execution in arenas. While Roman authorities at the time intended for public executions to serve as a warning to anyone who refused to honor traditional gods, the strategy did not work. Roman Emperor Nero started the trend in 64 CE after a great fire destroyed much of Rome. At the time, he needed people to blame for the disaster and chose the Christians as they were a small group of secretive people that lived on the fringes of society. The plan to scare the public away from the new faith failed as instead of fear, the lurid sights of their devotion to their faith even in the face of death, created curiosity among Roman citizens.
The public executions of Christians were meant to humiliate victims, their displays of courage when facing persecution were rare in a society built on power and self-interest. As a result, many Romans began to wonder what kind of god could give a person such strength. Tertullian, a famous writer from that era, notably wrote that the blood of martyrs acted as the seed of the church. Every time the state killed a believer, more people signed up to join the movement. While most people in the empire easily added the Roman Emperor to their list of gods in order to avoid trouble, the Christians refused to burn incense to the image of the ruler. Over time, the church became more organized and created a welfare system that the Roman government simply did not provide. When the Plague of Cyprian that emerged in 251 CE killed thousands of people, pagan priests and wealthy citizens fled to their country estates to avoid the sickness. Christians by contrast stayed in the cities to nurse the sick and bury the dead regardless of whether the victims were believers or not. This level of kindness earned them deep respect among the poor and middle classes. The actions also helped to earn the trust of the people.

The story of the Hundred Thousand Martyrs of Tbilisi centers on the mass execution of Georgian Christians in 1227 during the invasion of Tbilisi by Sultan Jalal al-Din of the Khwarazmian Empire...
Medieval Georgian chronicles (such as the Chronicle of a Hundred Years) state that 100,000 people were killed. While modern historians note that medieval figures often used large numbers symbolically to mean a vast or countless multitude, the event remains a foundational tragedy in national memory. The Georgian Orthodox Church canonized the victims as the Hundred Thousand Martyrs of Tbilisi, commemorating them every 13 November (October 31 according to the Old Style calendar) with memorial services and prayers held at the Mtkvari River bridges.
. . .
In 1227 Sultan Jalal al-Din of Khwarazm and his army of Turkmen attacked Georgia. On the first day of the battle the Georgian army valorously warded off the invaders as they were approaching Tbilisi. That night, however, a group of Persians who were living in Tbilisi secretly opened the gates and summoned the enemy army into the city.
The Khwarazmian forces sacked the city, slaughtering citizens, destroying homes, and desecrating religious sites. The Sultan removed the dome of the historic Sioni Cathedral and placed his throne inside it.
According to one manuscript in which this most terrible day in Georgian history was described: “Words are powerless to convey the destruction that the enemy wrought: tearing infants from their mothers’ breasts, they beat their heads against the bridge, watching as their eyes dropped from their skulls....”
A river of blood flowed through the city. The Turkmen castrated young children, raped women, and stabbed mothers to death over their children’s lifeless bodies. The whole city shuddered at the sound of wailing and lamentation. The river and streets of the city were filled with death.
The sultan Jalal al-Din ordered that the cupola of Sioni Cathedral be taken down and replaced by his vile throne. And at his command the sacred icons of the Theotokos and our Savior were carried out of Sioni Cathedral and placed at the center of the bridge across the Mtkvari River. The invaders goaded the people to the bridge, ordering them to cross it and spit on the holy icons. Those who betrayed the Christian Faith and mocked the icons were spared their lives, while the Orthodox confessors were beheaded.
One hundred thousand Georgians sacrificed their lives to venerate the holy icons. One hundred thousand severed heads and headless bodies were carried by the bloody current down the Mtkvari River.

In 1822, Muslim Turks captured two Greek Christian women in Naousa and attempted to force them to convert to Islam. They smeared them with honey on the head and tied them exposed, so as to receive the stings of wasps and of passersby.
The first woman, wife of Captain Zafeirakis, was then built into the wall up to the neck in the church of Hagia Sophia in Thessaloniki. She was left there for days for the entertainment of the wild mob that went there cursing and hitting her head with sticks as it protruded from the wall. She did not back down for a moment, strengthened until her last breath by prayer, and she never abandoned her Christian faith. Her martyrdom lasted five days. A passing gypsy woman, to hasten her end, threw a large stone at her, and thus the blessed one delivered her heroic soul into the hands of God, Whom she did not deny.
The other woman, Maria Karatasou, wife of Captain Karatasos, refused to change her faith, and for this Muhammad Pasha Abu Nabbut enclosed her in a sack with deadly snakes, where she was martyred.
The historian Eustathios Stougiannakis writes:
"The acute venom diffused into the veins of the martyr from the bites, however, killed her in sweet lethargy, praying until the last moment for her executioners and invoking the Most High and the Virgin."
And Pouqueville describes in the darkest colors to the civilized world the dramatic scenes he saw with his own eyes there:
"Many women naked were put up to the neck in sacks with cats, snakes, and mice"
The lifeless bodies of these holy women were eventually thrown into the sea.
These events took place during the Naousa massacre.
13 April 1822. Just 200 years ago.
409 men killed and over 400 women and children were enslaved.
