I played on those mid 90’s BA teams that created that divide. Now I coach at Franklin and have two sons playing. The fact that you think public schools have an advantage shows you have zero idea how high school football works. Private schools have every advantage possible. More money to pay top coaches. Better facilities. Better weight training programs. Better equipment. If the kids that lived in Franklin zone stayed at Franklin we would never lose a game. However, parents take their kids and pay 40K a year to go to schools where they have a 40yrd indoor sprinting tracks and weight bars that measure speed and power & coaches who make 200K a year vs our decade old weight equipment and coaches who make well below 100K a year. Every year private schools poach the best athletes and players from the local middle schools. How do I know this? B/c it happened to me this past year. Two private schools contacted me about bringing my kids to their school. Listing coaching, facilities and strength and conditioning programs as the main reason to leave. The problem is that parents drink the cool aid. They chase dreams that in most instances aren’t realistic. This is the main problem and why the divide is needed. I would love it if instead of spending the money at private schools those same parents would invest in their local schools. We absolutely could have our own versions of Lake Travis if that were to happen. But don’t hold your breath. The system was created for a reason and needs to stay until the recruiting stops. And that ain’t gonna happen.
