Several individuals, a couple who had never seen the player play in person joined forces to stifle my efforts to solidify the players National value. After all I was the only person in the room who had written a report on all of the players on our top 50 list.

It all brought me back to my last year working for a team, when I basically became vilified for fighting for a player that I strongly believed in. It wasn’t the 1st time I stood my ground, but it became apparent this situation was a little different.

Well obviously some things have changed over time. Much more emphasis has been placed on what the player can do at the present time. When some may say is short sided. Evidence by the number of superstar players who are on their 2nd or 3rd team before they’re old enough to buy a beer.

Many moons ago when I was 1st hired as a scout you would hear people who disagreed about a players ability end a conversation with we will see who was right in 5/6 years. Mainly because at that time so much of talent evaluation was about projecting a players future potential ( OFP).

Sources: The Colorado Rockies will add Steve Barningham to their scouting department. Barningham was most recently with the Atlanta Braves as an International and Pro Scout. He previously served as the Mets’ International Scouting Director (2021-2024), playing a role in the signings of Amed Rosario, Francisco Álvarez, Andrés Giménez and Elian Peña during his tenure in New York.

Matt Kleine's the guy, right, to be #Astros GM since he was walking the red carpet with Jim Crane? Not so fast, says @_JeremyBooth. The #Brewers executive has another opportunity. It's on the new Extra Bases, streaming on @KHOU 11 app.

THE SCOUTING CLASSROOM Stories Behind the Report THE GAME YOU DIDN’T STAY TO FINISH Knowing When You’ve Seen Enough and When You Haven’t. One of the most overlooked skills in professional scouting has nothing to do with grading a fastball or projecting a player’s future. It’s knowing how to manage your time. An Area Scout covering multiple states can’t watch every player for nine innings. Games overlap, pitchers work on different schedules, and the next ballpark might be hundreds of miles away. The question isn’t simply, “Who should I see?” It’s “What information do I still need, and where can I get it?” EVERY LOOK NEEDS A PURPOSE Before arriving, I wanted to know why I was there. Was it an initial evaluation, a follow-up, a chance to verify a grade, or a look before bringing in a Crosschecker? A starting pitcher may require a complete outing. The first inning shows his stuff. The fifth or sixth can reveal whether he maintains velocity, repeats his delivery, commands his secondary pitches and adjusts as hitters see him again. With a position player, I might already have enough defensive history but need more plate appearances against quality pitching. Leaving after two at-bats could mean leaving the most important question unanswered. The key is knowing what you came to learn. THE COST OF STAYING Every inning has an opportunity cost. If I’ve answered my questions at one game, staying another three innings could mean missing a starting pitcher across town who won’t throw again for a week. In the Four Corners territory, that missed look could mean another long drive and an entirely different trip. That makes advance scheduling, communication with coaches and knowing pitching rotations part of the evaluation process. The work starts before the first pitch. DON’T CONFUSE ACTIVITY WITH PRODUCTIVITY A scout can attend five games and accomplish very little. Another can attend two and collect the information needed to move several players forward. The number of games on your schedule isn’t the measure of your work. Neither is the number of names in your notebook. What matters is whether your looks answered meaningful questions. KNOW WHEN TO STAY There’s a danger in leaving too early. A pitcher struggling with his breaking ball might show you more by adjusting in the fourth inning than he did throwing 94 in the first. A hitter who strikes out twice might reveal something important in his next at-bat. Sometimes the adjustment is the evaluation. There is no magic number of innings or plate appearances. The decision depends on the player, your history and what remains unknown. THE LESSON In 20 years with the Angels and Brewers, I covered a territory where schedules overlapped and ballparks were separated by hundreds of miles. I couldn’t see every inning, so I had to make each look count. An Area Scout’s job isn’t to collect games attended. It’s to collect reliable information that helps the organization make better decisions. The best scouts don’t necessarily see the most games. They know which games they cannot afford to miss, and when they’ve seen enough to move on. #BehindTheRadarGun 🔎

From @MLBNetwork: The Rays (80 scouts) and Brewers (64) have two of the largest scouting departments in baseball. The Brewers (46 employees) and Rays (39) both rank in the top 7 in MLB in largest analytics departments. Spending to win doesn't necessarily involve top free agents.

At game 6 of the ALCS Monday night, a business colleague reached out to me and said “ I have to give it to you, you’ve been carrying a torch for Simpson for quite sometime. I remember when you sent me his info a few years back” I just chuckled & said I’ve gotten a few players right over the years. #2026WorldSeries
Chandler hit .402 as a HS Sr in college league. He’s currently on pace to break the stolen base record for the Northwoods league. One of the toughest players in the country to strike out this past Spring. Impactful speed!!!

It’s been said around the industry this type of activity is indicative of no changes being made internally, and essentially a GM hire that’s in name only. Otherwise, you wait on this especially with a likely lockout ahead. AGM Gavin Dickey oversees PD. He’s also interviewed for the GM job, as expected he would.
Replying to @GreenLotHeathen
two things can be true: a GM is ultimately responsible for everything, but there are some things that AGMs or farm directors take the lead on. this falls into the latter category.
