KenTrade’s review of Kenya's leather procedures shows why reform in the industry matters: a first-time exporter of leather articles currently faces 31 steps, while other leather products involve 11–26 steps depending on the product.
Many of these steps involve duplication and unclear requirements across agencies.
Participants identified practical ways to clarify rules, remove overlap and improve coordination. Their recommendations now go to the relevant regulators.
Clearer rules. Fewer duplicated steps. Stronger coordination.
Which of these would make the biggest difference for Kenya’s leather exporters?

Can Kenya turn its leather wealth into real export growth?
Kenya has the livestock and the ambition. The question is whether businesses can navigate the paperwork fast enough to compete.
From 21–23 October, KenTrade and Partner Government agencies together with industry players met in Naivasha to cut the administrative burden facing leather exporters. Organised under the @Kldc_official and facilitated by the @ITCnews through the EU-funded @eacmarkup II programme, the workshop brought together regulators and private-sector voices — including tanners, manufacturers and @KAM_Kenya
The opportunity is large. @KNBStats data shows roughly 13.7 million cattle, calves, sheep and goats were slaughtered in 2025. The government target is to grow the sector to KSh 120 billion and expand employment from about 17,000 to 100,000 jobs. That requires smoother processes, not just more production.
