#Buddy is one of those movies that wasnβt on my radar until 2 weeks ago but glad I was made aware of because itβs one of the most unhinged horror films Iβve seen in recent memory.
What starts as a colorful, Barney-style show spirals into a nightmare, with the film constantly finding new ways to push its premise further. The contrast between its cheerful aesthetic and genuinely sinister moments is fantastic.
Cristin Milioti and the young cast are great, the visuals pop and the demented Buddy the Unicorn (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key) has potential to be a new horror icon. Itβs bloody, bizarre and ridiculously entertaining without feeling like the usual formulaic horror fare.
I just wish it dug deeper into its mythology, because thereβs clearly more going on beneath the surface. But in an age where horror can feel formulaic, BUDDY is a high-concept movie that takes huge swings and nails them.
