October is National Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month — and I recently spoke with WWAY News about the importance of pedestrian safety and what we can do to prevent unnecessary traffic fatalities.
Making our roads safer takes both common-sense safety measures and personal responsibility. The choices we make behind the wheel can make a real difference.

I appreciated the opportunity to host the Traffic Safety Summit in Statesville and hear directly from local officials, law enforcement, and advocates about the challenges they are seeing on North Carolina’s roads.
As co-chair of the #NCGA Senate Committee on Transportation, these conversations provide valuable insight as we continue examining ways to improve transportation safety across our state.
We had a wonderful Traffic Safety Summit yesterday in Wilmington, the third stop in our four-part series across North Carolina.
Great conversations, valuable insights, and plenty of ideas were shared about how we can make North Carolina’s roads safer. Thanks to everyone who took part!
“Collaboration is key,” NCAST Executive Director Joe Stewart said. “Speeding is a menace. Traffic cameras can make a big difference in enforcement and free up officers for other duties. E-bikes are becoming a big concern, with many calls to require registration.”
And thank you to @wectnews and @WWAY for covering the summit. Check out their stories in the comments below.
