Ghana advances bean breeding!🇬🇭 Drought-tolerant Asibuo (SEF 47) & PABRA (SEF 55), released in 2025, & Ennepa for canning could boost incomes & nutrition in the cowpea-dominated North. PABRA Academy’s Maxwell Lamptey works on genomic selection, as @CSIR_crops conserves germplasm.
Our Director @JcRubyogo was impressed by how Ethiopia’s🇪🇹 bean value chain is thriving, powered by inspiring rural women entrepreneurs in Sidama, stronger research-market linkages & robust processing, thanks to #BRAINSProject by @BiovIntCIAT_eng & @icipe, supported by @CanadaDev
Right tools, better harvests! Under #3SFIProject supported by @SwissDevCoop, @BiovIntCIAT_eng & @RwandaAgriBoard trained school staff in Rusizi, Karongi & Nyamasheke to assemble & use seed planters, with live demos in school gardens- to boost yields & nourish learners thru meals.
Rwanda kicks off Season A (2026A) with a bang! Thru #3SFIProject by @SwissDevCoop, @BiovIntCIAT_eng & @RwandaAgriBoard distributed 5 tons of both bush & climbing high-iron beans seed across Karongi, Rusizi & Nyamasheke, nourishing communities & strengthening food security.
624 unique bean varieties. 46M+ farmers reached (58.9% women). 755 partnerships. 140 students capacitated. 365 seed systems. 3.5M of learners reached through school meals.
So many more numbers of impact from 30 years of PABRA in this short publication👉: tinyurl.com/2bzc8xfb
A better bean harvest starts beneath the soil. Through the #3SFI Project supported by @SwissDevCoop, 42+ tons of lime have been distributed to correct acidic soils in 25 schools in Nyamasheke, Rwanda—creating the right conditions for high-iron beans to thrive & nourish learners.
Through PABRA's Scaling Sustainable School Feeding Innovations (3SFI) project in Rwanda, the Alliance of Bioversity International and #CIAT has donated over 42 tonnes of agricultural lime to 25 schools with acidic soil in @Nyamasheke. The support aims to boost the production of high-iron beans and strengthen the national school feeding program by enabling schools to serve nutritious meals to learners.
Lime reduces soil acidity, which helps crops absorb nutrients more effectively and improves yields. The high-iron beans harvested by the schools will supplement school meals, helping to tackle malnutrition and anemia among learners and supporting their health, concentration and learning.

Africa is changing. Its food systems are too. 🌍🌱
What will Africa’s beans look like in 10, 20 or 30 years? At PABRA, breeders are looking ahead, by developing beans that can withstand climate pressures, meet consumer needs & respond to changing markets.

🫘🌍 At its 2026 Breeders Workshop in Kigali, Rwanda, @_PABRA marks 30 years uniting breeders across Africa, backed by the Alliance of Bioversity & CIAT. 🤝
More productive beans, better incomes, food security. 🌱🎯
In Rwanda’s @KarongiDistr, teams from @SwissDevCoop, @GAINalliance & @BiovIntCIAT_eng toured High-Iron Beans nutrition interventions, engaged farmers, caregivers & community health workers on nutrition services & lessons learned, while shaping joint actions to maximize impact.
How do we get promising bean varieties to farmers & markets? PABRA’s Breeding to Business Initiative, under the @IrlEmbMalawi-supported Growth Poles Project with @PalladiumImpact, links breeding, farmers & markets—ensuring early generation seed for timely multiplication & uptake.
No honeymoon after #PABRA30! The next chapter is action: modernizing breeding, building skills, upgrading testing facilities, & scaling seed supply. With @CGIARbreeding & partners, regional trials in 2027 will turn promising traits into better beans for farmers & families.
After a successful #PABRA30 in Kigali🇷🇼 breeders are meeting from 1–3 Sept. to review bean market segments, regional target product profiles & priority traits for breakthrough bean varieties. Also on the agenda: the PABRA breeding network & partner roles in breeding pipelines

Quality bean seed remains a key challenge for Rwanda’s bean value chain. Under #3SFIProject, @BiovIntCIAT_eng, thru PABRA with @RwandaAgriBoard & @Rwanda_Edu, met aggregators, traders, seed producers, cooperatives, agro-dealers & processors to boost seed supply & market linkages.
30 years ago, the support from @BiovIntCIAT_eng, CIDA (now @GAC_Corporate), @SwissDevCoop, the now-defunct USAID & other partners made PABRA’s birth possible.
You united bean research across Africa for the common good. Today, PABRA stands tall because of you! 🙏😊🤝🌱#PABRA30
🫘🎉 30 years of @_PABRA: +$100M/year in bean exports, better nutrition, more women empowered through beans. Sustained science transforms economies. 🔬🌍
